I'm cuious, if all the experts were coaches and they could choose a 16th region program to run for long term success, who would it be and why? Keep in mind that anyone can jump on 3 or 4 year bandwagon, I'm looking for a long term answer. What are your thoughts?

If long term success was truly the objective, why let Flynn go in the first place? Paul Patterson might command enough respect from those in power that he could actually get something done.

I have deliberated on whether or not to post this for several days. I have heard countless Ashland fans blame Mike Flynn for the current state of the Ashland basketball program, which by the way isn't really in that bad a shape.

 

My thought on the subject is has anyone stopped to think what kids would be at Ashland today if the Rose Hill situation had been handled in a different manner. I think most everyone felt that the OJ era at Rose Hill would be brief. Most area schools didn't like it but they let it run its course and didn't burn multilple bridges in the process. If things were handled differnt I think that the following kids would be at Ashland today:

 

Vanhoose

Blair

Barker

Euton

Robinson

and possibly Jackson and Bair

 

Not to mention Camreon Hall, and countless other young players who are no longer in the Ashland system or could have ended up there at some point in time.

 

With those kids would Ashland fans be concerned about their program? I think not, they would be more concerned about where they were going to stay in Lexington come March. Plus Rose Hill would basically be a non factor instead of the 5000 lbs. gorillia they are quickly becoming.

 

I don't think it is anyone persons doings, just the way things have turned out. I just don't think you can place the blame squarely on Mike Flynn. Just a thought.

I agree with the previous poster that I would take Ashland in a perfect world. But the state of Ashland basketball as it is will take some in the loop to lay hands off IMO. My choice is easy if that were the case. Let's see, multiple schools that feed the Middle school. Thousands of kids to pool from, unlike most in the region. But it is my belief that if the program is to thrive long term then a new coach should IMHO ask and be granted full control of basketball from the ground up. I would also encourage AAU participation. And it is my belief that these things aren't going to change. I think that Frances would be able to right the ship if given the opportunity.:thumb:

As I mentioned before I would love to see Shawn Conley get a shot to come home and coach his alma mater. My second choice would be Rowan Co.'s girl's Coach Thomas. He is an excellent coach, with a lot of energy and excitement to bring to the Tomcat program.

Coach Conley would be my personal favorite. Great coach, even a better person. With this endorsement I'm sure he is no longer in the running, sorry Shawn.

I think that whoever takes the position will exercise far more control over the feeder program than has previously been the case. I certainly hope so.

 

As for Frances taking the opportunity, I can safely say that my limited knowledge of offensive basketball played at that level would require that I have an excellent assistant head coach. Someone that has impeccable credentials, and has walked with the basketball Gods in the 16th Region. Someone that wrote the book on motion offense, refined the triangle, worked the kinks out of the high post, and has a great grasp of a double low post offense. Someone that can run a four out/one in, and make it purr like a kitten.

 

I'm looking for someone that has a great personality, good table manners, and is a natty dresser. A man with a large wallet, likes to eat at fine restaurants, enjoys the odd glass of wine, long moonlit walks on the beach, and has already made the last payment on a retirement home in the Bahamas.

Just kidding. I think the world of Troy Lee. IMO he would do an outstanding job but he seems awful happy with his program at Rowan. But you never know.

I think that there are resources in those schools that are available, not in cycles but sustainable resources. They are both 3A, a good enrollment. They both have a good fan base. Most importantly, I think that they would have the most ability to retain the better players. Maybe that is just a personal view, but I've always thought that those schools have a better base, the issue in today's world is keeping that base.

I'm still shocked! IMO the Ashland job is the BEST high school job in the State of Kentucky and one of the top high school jobs in the country! Ashland basketball is in Springfield, MA for a reason! They are the most feared progrm in our area period. And I would guess 99% of the coaches in the 16th region don't want to pull the Cats out of the hat come disrict or regional time!!!! Ashland basketball job (in high school) is equal to the coaching job at UK, Duke, North Carolina, or Kansas!

McDavid and Thomas would be special athletes at any school in the region. Beyond that you're reaching.

 

That freshman team dodged a bullet on a technicality by not facing what amounted to an outstanding 8th grade team at Rose Hill.

 

I realize that a lot of you guys find Scooterbob irritating, but the truth has a way of doing that. He makes a good point in regard to taking five years to develop a program. I would say a great coach might be able to do it in four, but without reinforcements Ashland will compete, they will not dominate.

 

 

First, What about Wilcox? If you think this kid is not capable of doing great things, I would strongly disagree. The reason we're not talking about him as a top player is because of his health. He has not had 1 season in which he has not been hampered by a serious injury. If he can stay healthy this year, watch out, he's capable of great things.
