Funny thing, that. I've often heard the battery compared to Abbot and Costello.

 

As for their second baseman, most of the opponents would tell you straight up, that Safe As Milk would have been better off playing with only three infielders ...

Thank you. I've been reading for years and figured this was as good a time as any to jump on in.

I would love to see Shawn Conley be given the opportunity to coach his alma mater. Brock Walter would also be an excellent choice, but with him already accepting the job as new soccer coach, I don't know if he would have the time.

I'm not so sure about that last part, LRCW. That Walters clan has some pretty sketchy characters in it.

In my opinion, it doesn’t matter who Ashland hires as head coach unless he brings some bodies with him. That’s not a slam against the great kids already in the system, it’s just going to take more than a talented coach to solve Ashland’s problems, especially in the immediate future.

 

Numbers are down, kids have more options of how to spend their time these days. Most families with kids serious about playing basketball don’t appreciate being told what they can do in their own time away from the school and the school team. Schools who do not participate in AAU and other extra-scholastic competition, especially at early levels are at a disadvantage. Ashland is one of those schools. Their emphasis seems to be more on football than basketball these days anyway.

 

It’s one thing not to have enough interest or participation to have a team… it’s absolutely absurd to have an administration or sports department dictate that no one will be permitted to participate except at certain times of the year.

 

In regard to the 2 1/2 coaches, I was thinking of Jeff Hall currently at Fairview, Tim Fraley at Rose Hill and Clay Euton who would have to come with Fraley to make the deal worthwhile (for Fraley.)

 

I counted Euton as half because it is my understanding that his job keeps him from the time commitment it takes to be a full-time head coach. He is a program builder with great success at the grade school, middle school and AAU levels. He's shown that he knows how to coach a team. I predict that he and Fraley will have great success at the high school level if they can keep their group together. They also have two very good coaches in Barber and Bush. Both have been in the system for years and have each had success at the grade school, middle school, J.V. and AAU levels.

 

Hall is a proven coach who would most likely bring his son and at least a couple of other quality young ballers with him.

 

Fraley is a quality coach who has paid his dues to develop a team with the size, talent and maturity to make some noise. If he brought Euton and company (which could amount to a half dozen or more quality young athletes) they would move Ashland from also ran status to region favorite for the next five or six seasons, possibly more.

 

Both coaches favor a wide open run and gun style that’s fun for players and fans when they have the horses to run with.

 

One other aspect of snagging Fraley and Euton would be nailing the lid shut on Rose Hill once and for all. Otherwise, it may be four of five years before Ashland sees another regional title.

 

Unfortunately for Ashland fans, (and fortunately for Rose Hill fans) you'd have a better chance of building a snowman in Hades than in seeing either of these coaching scenarios pan out.

I haven't heard that, but it's definitely a solid name, built on an excellent track record.
