Not to get off topic, but when I was going to EKU I had a couple classes with former Beechwood great Brandon Berger. I know he was a really good running back in high school. I was surprised when I saw he elected to play baseball instead of football. He obviously made the correct choice because he did make it to the majors. Does anyone know what offers he had to play football?

That is a good question, I may be able to find out for you.

 

On a related note, Brandon is a Coach on the current Beechwood staff.

I think its great to show the kids that they are a part of something that is more than just the here and now.

I'm really glad that Beechwood and Pikeville are meeting for the A state title. They had a nice rivalry going back in the late 80s and early 90s. It is nice to see them meeting in the championship.

 

Totally agree Westside. A lot of history between the two. When these two played in the semi finals, each school would always bring a HUGE crowd, and much anticipation like we're seeing now.

I understand Coach Rash showed his team some of the early Beechwood State Championship wins as part of the team preparation for their date with Pikeville this Thursday. I am told the team really enjoyed watching the games and Coach Rash did it in part to show his current team how the finals should be played.

 

I applaud Coach Rash, good job Coach!

 

This gives me cold chills thinking about the Glory Days!!!

Going to need to play like those teams to have a chance vs Pikeville.

 

I almost spit out my Dr. Pepper after reading this because I was laughing so hard.

 

Pikeville has a great team don't get me wrong but they aren't the 1987-88 or 89 teams they had.

 

If Beeechwood was playing like any of those dominate teams in the 90's like you said they would have to play like then Pikeville wouldn't have a chance.

 

After reading all of the comments from fan's of both teams it sounds like they are about even. It should be one heck of a game.

On a personal note, we (Beechwood) barely beat Paris in Beechwood's first ever state football championship in 1984. Both teams were about even, if we played ten games I doubt either team wins more than six...

 

Let me give some shoutouts to Scott Tackett, Chris Bowling, Steve Alhers, and Rodney Miller. There are many more guys I could mention but those four seniors were all stellar high school football players.

Brandon is truly one of the best guys involved with Northern Kentucky sports. Hands down the best hitting coach in the area, and anyone who has seen him at ATY knows this to be true. I don't know what offers he had to play football, but he was a heck of an athlete and I'm sure he would have succeeded wherever he went if he chose football.

Brandon Berger was one of my favorite running backs I've watched in KY. Always think of him when I see the name Beechwood along w G+Yeagle. Great to hear he's back there coaching and helping the youth.

Get ready for a repeat of dominance from Beechwood for years to come, or until Mayfield drops back down. lol

I have aquestion. Did Beechwood not play for the state championship the first time against Murray at EKU in the 70's? Mike Murray was the quarterback. Great ballplayer.Beechwood lost that game.

I am gonna answer my own question. I was there! Beechwoods first championship was in 1974 Against Murray. Fred Mariani was the coach Played at EKU.

Steve Ahlers is a soft spoken beast and very nice guy. He could put on the equipment today and still dominate.
