Cards fan here! I love the banter between the two programs' fans on here. I have been waiting for this game since this summer. 3-peat champs vs 2-peat champs, it just doesn't get any better. This will be a great hs football game, i wish the colts save travels to War Memorial and looking forward to a great game. In the end these are all young student-athletes playing a game they love and giving it all they got. They've already provided us with 13 awesome Friday Nights and I am sure they will not leave us unsatisfied on the 14th one. Good luck to both teams and may it be injury free!

Of Course, I like the cards in this one. 24-10. With a late score to seal it.

Then i guess Mayfield gets lucky cause they don't play till friday. :)

Nor do the Cards(fear Desales, that is).. We have faced many great teams over the years.. In the 70s, we played teams like Brentwood Academy, Memphis Douglas, E.St Louis, then in the 80s, we played some great Tilghman teams, Bellville, Ill, Blythville, Ar, in the 90s we played some great Hoptown teams, great Danville teams, Beechwood, Sikeston, Mo, Jackson, Mo, Dexter, Mo, Milan, Tn, Jackson Northside, Tn and many more.. It didn't slow down any in the 00s and 10s, so, to think they've never played a team like Desales before, like they are above and beyond anything we've ever seen, is really hilarious. While we respect your team and know it will be a tough, tough game, contrary to what you may believe, we've seen better and played better and while you Desales folks want to say we aren't scared, bring it, you ain't no Trinity or St X and no we aren't, but, neither are you and quit giving yourself credit for playing 4a all those years, when, it's been nearly 20 years since you met either of those teams in a real game, other than maybe a freshman or JV game. Not trying to start anything, but, you guys that keep on with that, "Mayfield has no idea what's about to hit them" theme, needs to just stop and do a little research on our history, otherwise, it makes you look foolish. We get it, ya'll are a great team, now, let's please just keep it at that, because the rest is of that nonsense is just babble with the brown tinted glasses slant and not reality..

Question: are we playing Desales or the Chicago Bears? That is a HUGE line, and you are correct about the line being the key. It always is. We have some talented playmakers in space, but if they can't find a hole to hit, it's about as good as having a Ferrari in rush hour traffic. Obviously, our line is nowhere near that size, so we rely on speed and technique. We are accustomed to playing big lines. We rarely play any small schools before district play, preferring to go up against the big boys from 3-6A, but I don't think we have faced a line that big this year. Luckily, heart isn't measurable in pounds or inches. Our boys got heart. I can't freaking wait for this one. This has the making of a GREAT game.

I agree totally. Technique appears to be where the fine tuning has taken place in the last few weeks. And after I had a chance to look it up, I actually UNDERestimated the size of our O-Line. LT 6'7", 285 (not 250-260). LG 6'0", 260 (not 230-240). C 5'11", 235. RG 6'2", 310. RT 6'3", 320. We sub in some guys that are smaller, but those five will play a majority of the snaps. You are right. Heart cannot be measured. Speed and heart vs. Size and heart - THAT is why this is going to be a great game!

How in the world did CAL score 19 points on that vaunted dominating defense? Must have been turnovers by the Colts, a short field, kickoff/punt return, by chance, some other fluke of the bouncing ball.. No way another HS team within 5 states could score that many on the Colts without a lot of help, right?

18 points!!! :-) 2 TDs (one 2-pt conversion) and a 43-yard FG. The second TD came in garbage time but it was against our first team defense. Most points scored against us in two years. CAL's offense is for real - ask Simon Kenton.

Our little 3 man front on D at 195, 235 and 240 is probably going to get pushed all over the place.. 2 of our OL are under 200 LBs.. I sure hope our boys don't get hurt against those brutes..

Well, considering Simon Kenton had about 60 on the board against the 2nd best D in 2a, I'd imagine some of those points came against the JV, although, I do believe CAL scored quite a few early and on the starters..

I have all the respect in the world for Mayfield. If you know anything about HS football in this state, you would know how good Mayfield's football program is. But that being .said, all the history or past accomplishments do not mean anything as far as this game on Friday night is concerned. This about two great teams playing each other for a right to go to BG. I hope it is a well played game and may the best team win.

I don't recall exactly, but I think CAL was leading that game deep in the 3rd quarter, and had 20-something points at that time. For the record, I'm not positive about that, but I think that's right. Either way, not very relevant to this game.

Three time defending state champs Mayfield vs. two time defending state champs DeSales at War Memorial Stadium... Just typing that out makes me jealous of all that will be in attendance on Friday. I'm not surprised one bit that this is the biggest of the twelve game threads. You didn't exactly have to be Nostradamus to see this one coming.

As for the game itself, I like DeSales' form a little more at the moment. They proved against CAL that, yet again, they know how to win when it matters most. I think the Colt's depth and size up front will win the day.

With the defensive struggle this one is shaping up to be, a field goal or two may make the difference. How is DS's placekicker?

Good enough to go on scholarship to UL for kicking.

Actually, our programs history and what we have accomplished in the past has a lot to do with this game. That is one of the the key ingredients in this programs secret recipe. Kids in this town grow up watching the Cards play, and win games that we probably shouldn't. Year after year after year. By the time kids reach high school they can name all their favorite players from past teams. They dream of the day they can get out there and imitate those players. We also have the expectation of a state championship every year. Anything less is unacceptable. That's just how it is here. So basically I say all this to say, yes our history has way more to do with this game than you might believe. Just an alumni's thoughts.

But that being said, all the history or past accomplishments do not mean anything as far as this game on Friday night is concerned.

This is where you are wrong, and 95% of the teams in KY just don't get it. That history means everything to this program. Those boys in Mayfield, as soon as they understand football, want to be a CARDINAL.

Every one of them wants to win State. They don't "believe" they can win State, they EXPECT to win State, every single year. Very few teams have this mentality.

Ok every team we play is bigger...one thing you cannot defend is speed!! Size do not matter to Mayfield!!

I am really not going to get into the shouting match... Everybody in Mayfield knows who I am... I say crazy stuff, but for us to get all jacked up over few comments... We should not... The top offense in state was shut down last week in Mayfield... Desales came back and laid it to a team that shut them out in regular season... There are many angles and arguments that we can create... However, these young men on both sides of the ball for each team have earned the right to be there and I have not. Just like anybody else that does not suit up for the 4 qrts on Friday night... Mayfield is not going to be sending out people to fire off guns at hotel rooms... We do have a older facility but its like being at Wrigley Field in away... History!!! Tradition!! Desales has a great team and this is what we wanted... But seriously lets not make this something of stupidity because we know the odds can change for anybody in a second... We both want our teams to win and honestly I cannot say that I am not concerned about this and that... But the last time I checked, my phone didn't have any missed calls from Mayfield school board asking me to advise coaches or players because I am a expert on how to get this done. I am a fan with 3 siblings in the high school and I want to be supportive of their success on and off the field... Desales the little trinity ok well just come on down play 4 qrts and see what we got... Last time I checked trinity is at home watching, so I wish you safe travels and wish you guys to be safe on the field...

It's hard to pick a winner in this matchup. DS is very sound defensively and runs the ball well, a great recipe for success, especially this time of year. I think they have the advantage in the trenches, and the QB's ability to run is an added dimension. I see where they run the hybrid T and also get into spread some. Mostly runs out of the wing T and some boot passes. Spread formations are mostly throwing, but I think this is where the QB does most of damage on the ground with those bigger running lanes. Their passing game is adequate. Backs run really hard, usually break at least one tackle on every carry.

Mayfield's key will be stopping the run, which I think plays to their strength. If they can force DS to throw they have a great chance of winning, provided they can score. MF's offensive playcalling can be a bit conservative at times, but they do a good job of keeping the defense honest. I think MF QB will be the deciding factor in this game (much like last week). If he can make the defense pay for creeping up, MF wins.

This matchup reminds me of MF vs McCracken. They outmanned MF in the trenches BIG TIME and from what I remember MC ran the ball quite well. Good news for MF, they were outmanned in that game and still put themselves in a position to win at the end. I think last weeks game with OC was played tight (playing to not make mistakes) and it took both teams awhile to get going. I see the same thing this friday. I will be shocked if either team scores more than three touchdowns.

Lastly, for the past 5 years I have continually thought "there is no way they (MF) can do it again. They lost too much. They're schedule is tougher. They're in a different class. It't too hard to have this kind of sustained success"...and every year they make me eat my words. Surely they aren't going to stop now.
