Just curious to find out what all the bluebird faithful think is the best team in Highlands history, I would think the 2009 team has to be up there .

Every team stands on the shoulders of those before them.

I'll show my bias and vote for 2007. Undefeated, beat "D1 Loaded" Trotwood Madison at Nippert on National television, defeated 2 other State Champions (Central and Lex Cath) along the way, rolled through the post season by a combined score of 219-40 (Including a 40-0 win against Cov Cath), culminating with a 28-7 pounding of Bowling Green in the Title Game.

Good one

This could get interesting because you could make a solid case for probably 10 teams based on record, sos and talent that year. 1998 had Gino G. as a backup qb.

For whom? For everyone outside of Fort Thomas... this years Highlands team is the best I can remember. Just kidding.

'98

Beat Male, the eventual 4A state champion. Undefeated 3A Champion, beat Lou. Waggoner (who upset undefeated BG) 56-7 in Louisville for title. Broke a large amount of records. D1 Loaded. All fueled by rage from the mud bowl, I don't think one player cracked a smile the whole season until the 4th quarter of the championship.

This will not be the popular choice on this site do to most of us not seeing them play but .....

the 1957 team is the team that set the standard. Undefeated regular season and mythical state champions. Outscored their opponents 411-44.

I don't know who I would say is the best, but these are teams I really like (all since 1980 because I can't judge anything before that as I was too young):

1982: Highlands beat a loaded Christian County in Rec Bowl. Highlands went undefeated and won State AAA and Christian County went undefeated to win state AAAA. Highlands was ranked top 25 in USA Today, when that poll was really in its infancy. Jeff Kremer was QB and John Bankemper was RB.

1996: Led by Frisk - Birds went undefeated. Started the season beating St. X. and ended the season beating UC bound Deontey Kenner and 25 year old UK bound Artoose Pinner.

1998: Lorenzen, Smith, Ulbricht, and an undersized Noah Gibson led the Birds. Very similar to 1981 - Highlands beat Male in Champions Bowl to start season and both Highlands and Male went on to win state championships. Male's QB was Gerry Ahrens, who either went to Arkansas and transferred to Louisville or vice versa.

2000: Led by Guidugli, Hamblen, Scott, Grover, etc. Started season by beating Trinity in what I believe was Bob Beatty's first game as coach. Highlands was up big and threatened to put a running clock on the Rocks, but it never got to that point and Trinity came roaring back late to make game interesting. Only loss was a 7 point decision to Elder in front of really big crowd at Paul Brown Stadium with a call that will forever haunt Bluebird fans the same way Lattener's shot haunts Cat fans.

Others:

- 2004 was an awfully good team that is mostly know for being the Mike Mitchell team.

- 2007 as someone mentioned had a nice run and was undefeated.

- 2008 Highlands only loss was to a really good Colerain team.

- 2009 team broke through with a GCL win beating Cincy. St. X and going undefeated - led by Austin Collinsworth and a Soph. Pat Towles.

- 2011 - Pat's senior year was undefeated and a nice team.

- 2012 - Donovan McCoy was QB and only loss was to Elder.

How about the 1982 team?

The 1st Kentucky team to go 15-0 and I believe they pitched 6-7 shutouts that year. When that group were Freshman they went unscored on and someone made a crazy comment that no one crossed the 50 yard line throughout the season. Now that's impressive!

What is the highest Highlands has ever finished in the "USA Today" High School rankings? What year was it?

1982 I think they finished 20th in the final USA Super Prep Rankings!

1982 I think they finished 20th in the final USA Super Prep Rankings!

98 finished 19th in USA Today

09 finished 3rd.
