EKU Pitched $10 Million In Renovations In D1 Sunbelt Bid

Featured Replies

Good, with some improvements to the stadium EKU may end up being a worthy host for the State Football Finals.

It needs it. The field is nice but the facility isn't much. An upgrade, whether they go D1 or not, will be better for their program.

Agree, last time I was there it definitely had that run down 1970s feeling.

I know building an entirely new facility is probably not that practical for EKU, but I just never liked the aspect of having stands that don't surround the field. WKU's field doesn't hold that much more than Eastern's field, but it just feels bigger to me because the field is surrounded. I don't know how much it would cost to build an entirely new stadium, but if they are willing to fork over 10 million for renovations, they could build a new bowl style stadium. I understand some people in Richmond may like the tradition of that stadium, but if I was a recruit and went in and saw Eastern's stadium, it would definitely be a negative. The sound just echos better in bowl style stadiums and makes them seem bigger. I also think it would be a much better atmosphere for the fans because they will all be much closer to the field. Just my .02.

When Eastern's field was built, legend has it that the General Assembly wouldn't cough up money for the field. But they were willing to pay for a new education building...So EKU submitted a plan and it was approved that built a new Physical Education and ROTC building that just happened to have a slanted roof that would seat several thousand of your closest friends.

That looks a lot like University of the Cumberlands stadium.

They've already torn down the visitor's stands to make room for this.

How many fans does EKU have per game?

They had 12,800 for their opener, 7800 last week.

Would love to see EKU upgrade their facilities and make the leap to FBS, haven't been to game their in years, but it was in dire need of a facelift then.
