While I think CovCath will win, I don't think this game will be the blowout most are thinking. Southern was up 28-7 at half against Grant and clearly took their foot off the accelerator in the second half. It nearly cost them the game. CovCath will be a making a 2 hour bus trip for a game I see the Eagles playing much better this week than they did last week. If the Colonels get the first half Eagles from last week for a full game, this will be good game.

Southern was up on Grant Co. 27-7 at the half. Southern thought the game was over to start the 2nd half and Grant came back. I do think Cov Cath wins this game but if Southern plays a full game this will be good game, which I think will happen.

I think we had MS at #16.

2 for 10 for 15 yards is not going to get it done against CovCath even if you can run the ball well. They need to find some balance or it will be a long night.

Run, run, run, run, play action pass, run, run, run, play action pass, run, run, run...rinse and repeat.

Solid run game that sets up a solid play action pass game. QB throws a nice ball.

Madison Southern is one of the top rushing teams in 5A. They only pass throw to throw the defense off or keep them honest. Madison Southern does have one of the best Secondaries in 5A. The key for this is to stay in man defense and not go to zone. Everytime Southern plays zone in the secondary thats when trouble happens. Speed wise Southern will match-up just fine with Cov Cath. Madison Southern is also very good on special teams so this part of the game should favor the Eagles. If Cov. Catholic keeps Madison Southern in 3rd and long the Eagles will struggle because even though Slone has a big arm, the WR's are suspect at best.

Madison Southerns first two TD's vs Grant were the result of short fields from a blocked punt (where they drove in @ 30 yards from there) and a fumble recovered at @ Grants 5 yard line. Grant then drove down and made it 14-7. So Grant gifted them 14 points off the bat making it tough to overcome.

 

Having said that, Cov Cath can not afford to give Madison Southern the same kind of gifts. Nor can they hurt themselves by extending the opponents drives with silly penalties like they did against Anderson.

 

Focus on stopping the run and pick up the slots, TE's and RB's streaking down the hashes on passing downs. Conversely on offense, you have to establish the run which I'd like to think Cov Cath can do with their personnel.

Covington Catholic up next for Eagles in Class 5A playoff second round

After hanging on for a 28-27 win over Grant County last week, the Eagles welcome in Covington Catholic (4-7) for a Class 5A second-round playoff game tonight in Berea.

 

This is the first time in Madison Southern (5-5) history that the school has hosted back-to-back playoff games and it took two big late-game defensive stops last week to make it happen.

 

After dominating the first half to take a commanding 28-7 lead, the Eagles’ lackadaisical second-half effort allowed Grant County to come back and have an opportunity to take the lead inside the final three minutes of the game.

But, after not stopping the Grant offense the entire second half, the Eagles shut down a two-point conversion attempt to preserve the win.

 

That lack of focus can’t happen this week against a CovCath team that is much better than its record might indicate.
