I guess circumstances would dictate that. Unarmed? What did is he accused of? Is he headed into a residential area? Lots of variables.

Actually, I'm not sure if he actually "fled" or was shot at the spot of the ramming of the cruisers. I can't tell by the stories I've read.

So a guy wanted for , say , lack of child support flees from police and in doing so rams the officer's car. You're saying a high-speed chase and guns firing is acceptable?

You never know ever reason someone is fleeing or what danger they present. Guy in Richmond that shot the officer had a warrant for probation violation. Probation was for what most would consider non-violent crimes to begin with. You pull that guy over for a busted tail light and he tries to run over you and you shoot him...you didn't shoot him over a busted tail light or even over the warrant...you shot him because he tried to harm you.

So if Dead Beat Dad in your scenario tries to run over you, yes you shoot him. If he flees you pursue him.

 

If you see a child in the car you pursue at a safe distance and do everything in your power not to put the child in danger.

All depends on the circumstances. If it's just a warrant service and he's no risk to anyone else at that time then just get him later. Now you can tack on at least one or two other charges as well.

 

 

 

 

This is a bad situation for sure. I don't agree with just get them later. It promotes criminals to just say all we have to do is run from the police and they will let us go.
