Child Killed In Police Shooting Involving Child's Dad

Featured Replies

Jeremy Mardis was six. In the back seat of his dad's car when police blocked the car trying to serve a warrant.

Dad rammed the vehcles and took off.

Police fired multiple shots hitting the dad but also hitting the child in the back seat. Note: This report says the shots came from the officers. Another says the shots came from "outside of the vehicle." Officer in the video says nothing has been determined.

I can't tell if the dad was also firing at the police.

More and more departments are implementing the DOJ suggestion of not shooting into moving vehicles. No word yet if this department has such a policy.

Every officer involved I'm sure is absolutely devastated by this...and it's ALL the dad's fault and I bet the dad blames the cops. PULL OVER and take your medicine!

Dad is obviously to blame.

However, if the dad was not firing at them and was fleeing then I'm not sure the police are absolved. A person ramming the police car does not give police justification to fire shots as it's fleeing. Too many risks.

All depends on the circumstances. If it's just a warrant service and he's no risk to anyone else at that time then just get him later. Now you can tack on at least one or two other charges as well.

Unless he's getting ready to IMMEDIATELY kill someone or run over them then it's fair to ask if shooting is justified. Too many risks if no one is in IMMEDIATE danger.

A child died over a warrant and a damaged cruiser. That's hard to take.

I'd think that ramming vehicles would constitute immediate danger Clyde.

I don't think it's fair to ask. If the threat isn't there you don't shoot.

Have they said what the warrant was for?

Depends. How much distance was there for him to gain speed? If they had him penned in and he wasn't showing a gun AND they didn't know who else was in the car....

The dad had a 3500 lb. weapon that he used against the LEO's. Terrible tragedy but the fact remains that the dad is 100% responsible for this.

There are a lot of questions for sure about this that the public has, but don't have answers to yet.

Many cases in which shooting would be warranted and some where they shouldn't have shot.

I have no police training, and I'd have shot that dude. I hate that the officers will likely assume some responsibility in the tragic death of the child. I agree with your premise here Clyde, but it doesn't hold for me in this situation.

I'll agree if he had a big distance between his starting point and ramming them. If the officers had him penned in though and were at close range i.e. hard to do a lot of damage to those inside then questions need to be asked.

If the officer's car was 5 feet from the truck or 10 feet from the truck is that enough distance to put the officers' lives in danger? If not, what distance is enough?

I can't even imagine what those officer's are probably feeling right now.

Boggles my mind that someone would be as reckless as this dude was with a 6 year old child in the vehicle. Just sickening all around.
