Does the Varsity Coach Determine Who Makes the Frosh Team?

Yes.

Gotcha. I guess that's one more advantage for Catholic schools. I bet CCH had 50 kids trying out.

Once knew a Varsity coach who admitted he made the mistake of not talking to a kid and his family before allowing him to be cut from Frosh team. Kid was average skill and 6 foot maybe 150lb. They kept 12 and kid was probably 14th best or so. Unknown to Varsity coach Dad was 6'7 and Mom was 6'2". Kid was 6'4" as Soph and ended up 6'9" 250 Senior year and played Baseball quite well all four years. Became quite skilled in basketball but would never consider playing basketball again when Coach inquired. Coach said after that he always more involved in Frosh cuts.

I always wonder about that - 50 kids trying out. I know kids choose a school for reasons other than basketball. But if you are a good basketball player who wants to play in high school, wouldn't you go to another school? There is no doubt there are more than a few players that get cut at Cov Cath who would start for other freshman teams and go on to play throughout high school.

A good player typically wants to play for the best & typically doesn't think they will be one of the Cuts.

Those questions are already being asked. I've had two recent conversations with parents who have junior high kids. CCH is being considered BUT since their kids want to play multiple sports in high school other Catholic schools are being considered. One even has a boy currently at CCH.

I'd be curious to know how many boys that were frosh last year left to go play elsewhere.

I like to refer to potential as "project". Had a kid a few years ago that was cut as an 8th grader, attended Bishop Brossart and was "encouraged" to try out at BBHS. He was definitely a project. 6'9" or so and probably 250 - 260 lbs.

Fast Forward: Same kid playing for Transy in 2012 I believe had 6 points and 9 rebounds in an early exhibition against UK at Rupp, to include an awesome dunk.

Sometimes coaches overlook projects for immediacy....sometimes they should not

How big was the kid in the 8th grade that got cut and went to transy. If he was that big in the 8th grade then the coach was nuts to cut him.

Some of this depends on the mental makeup of the kid as well. I know of multiple kids who were cut in middle school who didn't even bother to try out in high school simply because they never got over the rejection of being cut in middle school.

That kid is a PERFECT example of the kid I'm talking about. Big body that has a lot of development ahead of it.

He was probably 6' 2" / 3" maybe....after he was cut, had to be begged by the B Team coach to come out and play. I think motivation played a huge factor because the improvements from 8th grade to high school were exponential. He probably needed to be cut in 8th grade IMO

If you did not start 8th grade at St Joseph, St Agnes, Blessed Sacrament, St Pius, etc. and you want to play high school basketball, you should be looking someplace other than CCH. More than half the kids that started for all those schools I listed won't even make the team at CCH.

He was a little out of shape in the 8th grade and didn't care to run a whole lot during practice/tryouts. Didn't want to put forward the effort required. He was OK being cut. As BB mentioned he was begged to come out for the combo B team and ended up having a good time.

Got to HS and they could tell he was a project and continued to work with him as part of the team and one on one. got involved in some AAU and developed nicely.

His junior year averaged 8.5 PPG and 4 RPB

His senior year averaged 12.3 PPG and 7.5 RPG

Pretty good student and Transy saw his as a project as well.

fun to watch him play at Rupp!

I coach a team in the B league last year. Wow, loads of talent at those schools considering the kids I watched never even made the A team!

No doubt. That's my point. I bet the best CCH intramural team would be a .500 + high school team. But if those kids are happy and don't care about playing high school basketball, that's great.

.500 is a bit much.
