Does the Varsity Coach Determine Who Makes the Frosh Team?

Featured Replies

I worked a frosh age rec league basketball game this weekend. A real mixed bag of skill.

I had a kid that is about 6'5 250 - carrying too much weight but is only 14. Kid had decent skill. Really good about getting the board , turning, and then getting the outlet pass out quickly.

Got me to thinking why a team wouldn't take this kid as a project. If I were the varsity coach I'd be putting him on the team JUST to keep him interested and get him into a conditioning program to see if he can develop.

Do varsity coaches make the decisions or do the frosh coaches ?

They should, IMO. They should have complete control of the program, but should accept input from their staff on kids they are passionate about.

Every year I coached HS the head coach made the call on freshmen. Some don't believe in cutting anyone. Others will only keep the ones they think can play and contribute.

Most programs need the practice bodies and will keep 15-18 players on the freshmen team.

I believe you keep frosh kids that could develop into players- size, speed, etc. and then cut them before their junior season if they don't develop and cannot help the team win.

Thanks. No chance this kid shouldn't have been kept and worked with unless he's a turd.

From my experience it is the frosh coach that makes the decision with the head coach's review, input, and approval. Varsity coach always has the final say.

I agree with 7's. Frosh coach evaluates but varsity has final say. If varsity coach sees a project worthwhile, he will tell the frosh coach to keep him.

I've also heard of a story where a head coach told the frosh coach he wanted a certain kid to get x minutes per game in order to develop him.

Every coach is different. I could be mistaken but Boyle County hasn't cut a freshman while Coach Adams has been at Boyle County.

I would do that.

When I played, there was a freshman coach or coaches but the head coach had the final say.

How many are on the roster?

If I'm the varsity coach and there is a 6'5'', 250 pound frosh interested in basketball, the frosh coach is going to have one helluva time explaining to me why he shouldn't be on the team.

Agreed

How many are on the roster?

This year I believe the number is 15. I'd say under Coach Adams time here at Boyle County the freshman team probably have averaged 10-12 players on it each year. Including this year's freshman team this is at least the second time there have been 15 freshmen on the team.

There are many reasons why he isn't on his schools freshman team.

Maybe he didn't try out, maybe, he doesn't want to put in the time, he may be pkaying rec league to stay in shape for football etc. Maybe he is a great kid who struggles in the classroom. I could think of many more reasons but I'm sure you get it.
