Does the Varsity Coach Determine Who Makes the Frosh Team?

Featured Replies

Mick Cronin always said when he was coaching freshman at Woodward, "You never cut a kid with in 9th grade with big feet"

You have to keep 6'5" 250lb, work with him.

On a side note, my daughter was a libero/ds in Volleyball which plays the back line. In middle school, it was a little tough to explain to her during Club tryouts, they would take girls based on potential height rather than current talent.

I've seen where Varsity coaches have say in who makes 8th grade teams.

The kid could have bad grades?

There are many reasons why he isn't on his schools freshman team. Maybe he didn't try out' date=' maybe, he doesn't want to put in the time, he may be pkaying rec league to stay in shape for football etc. Maybe he is a great kid who struggles in the classroom. I could think of many more reasons but I'm sure you get it.[/quote']

I do.

All valid.

@Clyde are we sure he is not trying out for the frosh team? Could he just be picking up some extra gym time, though some coaches don't like that? Where would he be going to school?

His coach told me didn't make the frosh team.

I'll refrain from naming the school. Just curious as to the process.

Does he play football? If not he should be at that size.

He should be playing something!!!!!! They didn't have freshman tryouts when I was a freshman. The high school coaches met with the 8th grade coaches and picked a freshman team. I didn't get picked, another example where lack of talent and athletic ability was held against me.

This year I believe the number is 15. I'd say under Coach Adams time here at Boyle County the freshman team probably have averaged 10-12 players on it each year. Including this year's freshman team this is at least the second time there have been 15 freshmen on the team.

How does a school with Boyle's size and recent success only have 15 frosh trying out?

This is more of a football area than a basketball area. We really don't even have tryouts. If you want to play then show up when conditioning starts. I think you may be overestimating our numbers also. 15 freshmen is a lot to me. Especially when chances are there will probably only be about 8 who see time on the court. It's always interesting to see who comes back their sophomore year. Also, with middle school conducting tryouts and kids getting cut in middle school most kids that were cut in middle school aren't planning to play in high school. Middle school carries 12-15 per team depending on the numbers.

I do think we have close to 10 sophomores on the team this year and with the large number of seniors we have it caused some kids to get cut from the JV/Varsity teams for the first time ever. It was simply too many kids wanting to play. I think recent success spurred those numbers.

Is there only one middle school that feeds into BCHS?

Yes.

I know you say a school the size of Boyle should have more kids, but I disagree. How many middle schools are there in Boyle Co? Kids probably start getting cut in 6th grade and by the time they get to 9th grade you only have 12 - 15 kids left and that is before the athletes start focusing on just one sport. School size doesn't matter if you don't have multiple middle schools!

Is there only one middle school that feeds into BCHS?
