You think so? Get the best team with a good coach and the right schedule you don't think they could go .500?

To answer Clyde's question, I would hope the hs coach has the final say in who makes the freshman team.

 

Now, as for me, the majority of kids I get at Fox Creek are the kids who either were never good enough to make it so didn't try out, got cut, or maybe made the middle school or freshman team the previous year and never got off the bench to play.

 

Sometimes a kid will come out that I haven't seen before, and at first glance I say "why did he get cut" or "why did he never get to play". Then we start into drills and actual fundamentals of the game. I have freshman who played middle school ball who don't have the first clue about defense...don't know the proper way to set a screen, much less roll off of one...never been taught proper shooting form/technique...can't dribble. Don't even know what a double team is. Sometimes I think, what in the world is going on? How can these kids play middle school ball and not know some of this stuff. Some kids I then see, you tell them something and it goes in one ear and right out the other. Some have the attention span about as long as it takes a beam of light to move 1 inch. Others...there's no reason they shouldn't know and I just have to figure they just haven't been worked with very well.

 

Some will have the ability but just don't have the competitive drive it takes to beat someone and/or not willing to put in the work it takes to compete, which is why they end up with us...we take everyone as long as they behave and make the required weekly church service. I have had some kids that had true ability and were too lazy to breath if their body didn't do it automatically for them. Those you have to shrug your shoulders at and say "if only".

I coach a team in the B league last year. Wow, loads of talent at those schools considering the kids I watched never even made the A team!
