Should KHSAA Championship Games have been played in a downpour Tuesday night?

Featured Replies

I think pretty much the whole state had rain all day Tuesday and the 4 Girls teams that played in NKY played in a steady downpour all night long.

Should the games have been postponed until Wednesday night when the rain subsided?

A) I do not believe it is a good safety situation to have 22 players running around on a slick turf all game. We stop games for heat and for lightning for safety reasons.

B) I do not believe teams should work all year to advance and play in such conditions when a regular season game in such conditions would have been rescheduled most likely.

C) I know Football and Cross Country championships can take place in the heavy rain. Not sure they should either. But the football rarely hits a rain soaked turf unlike a soccer ball which is on the turf for much of the game and effects passing, shooting, ball controlling etc. And Football can wear extra gear and dry off when not on the field or even in the huddle.

D) Playing Wednesday vs Tuesday would not effect fatigue or preparation for the next games since they do not take place until Saturday.

E) Fans and students and parents would benefit from better conditions to watch or attend a game in. And more ticket and concession sales.

What say you?

Agree 100%. Especially ND vs Brossart. No harm in delaying the game until Wednesday. I can't speak for other regions who would have to travel significant miles to play, but this matchup was right in both teams' backyard. The goalies are the ones who feel the elements more than any of the other players. That's a burden for them alone, much less the other players and fans. If nothing else, you could draw a bigger crowd and that would mean more green.

Were any regular season games on turf cancelled or rescheduled this season due to rain?

Bowling Green and Owensboro Catholic did NOT play Tuesday night because of the rain.

Granted BG has a grass field.

But Owensboro Catholic drove all the way to Bowling Green before finding out it was postponed.

And Trinity-Central Hardin boys last year was nearly postponed for field conditions.

KHSAA did NOT force teams to play Tuesday.

Obviously exceptions are made.

I sure would've much rather been out in the elements tonight than last night. That was one of the most miserable weather experiences I've ever had at a ballgame.

While the drainage on Mercy's turf field helped prevent pooling water and such, it still seemed difficult for the teams to possess and pass well. It was just So. Much. Water.

The games should have been postponed till tonight . During the regular season the ad controls whether to play before the contest starts but who has that control during the tournament? If it's the ad's then this was a bad decision if it's the khsaa the ad should have asked for a postponement.

It's an outdoor sport. Play outdoors unless it's dangerous.

I'm guessing the issue with the grass field at Bowling Green Tuesday night was made much worse because it had already been tore up in boys BG-Daviess County game on Monday night in the rain. Same field, I'm assuming.

Not sure where they played tonight, but Owensboro Catholic beat BG 4-0. I'm sure they could have done without the drive Tuesday, but it looks like it worked out OK for OC.

I suppose that depends on how you define "dangerous" in this situation. With uncertain footing a wet and/or muddy field could lead to a lot more slipping, and the ensuing knee and ankle injuries that could accompany it. The team trainer I talked to last night expressed these worries.

It is Autumn in Kentucky. Rain happens. These kids have and will play in worse conditions than what was experienced Tuesday night. Early season tournaments take place in March, often with snow and ice as factors. Some players actually like rain games and would much rather play in them than in 90+ degree heat with high humidity. Muddy, soaked uniforms worn as a badge of honor.

Can't imagine muddy uniforms happens often.

Seems like every time it rained, even a little, and it was supposed to be on a grass field, the game was rescheduled, cancelled, or moved to the other teams turf field.

No, not often, but when it happened, the girls seemed to take a lot of pride when comparing who got the dirtiest! Soccer players are not dainty little ladies on the pitch :0)

Host team AD has the ability to determine conditions for play, irrespective of indoor or outdoor. For outdoor sports, with the exception of softball which takes into account field conditions, I believe the general rule is play unless lightning

Oh well ... either no one knows of any games canceled or they don't want to answer the question.

Raining hard but I saw very little slippage and they were playing hard as well. Could have waited but didn't and all went well as far as I know.
