Offisdes in soccer would actually be compared to lining up offsides in football...not outrunning the player. You wouldn't let the WR stand at the goal line during the snap, right.

The principle is the same. The line of scrimmage in football is an invention of people seeking to create order where there was chaos; a holdover from the scrum of the earliest days of the sport. It's the way you don't have guys just all over the field.

Mex mentioned how physical soccer is. My son grew up with a pretty nice basketball player. NKAC defensive player of the year. Kid also happened to be a grass fairy. First team NKAC and maybe even higher accolades in soccer.

Mom HATED him playing basketball. It was too physical and he frequently got hurt while playing hoops. Never got hurt while on the pitch. Mom always said it was because the size and strength of the kids who played hoops versus the size of the kids who played soccer.

In today's concussion protocol world there is no way someone could successfully head a ball and not have a "concussion".

This x 100.

Soccer is an incredible sport. I've coached youth soccer for almost 10 seasons now and it is far from boring.

Anyone who says it is boring doesn't fully understand the sport. There's a lot more to it than scoring goals.

Wrong! I've tried very hard to enjoy and appreciate the game. Took coaching classes, coached, played in a league for 2 years. Very boring game. I was very dissappointed I could compete against kids that played soccer in college. They were half my age and still not that good at the game.

By the way, many find fishing and hunting boring as well.

Offside in soccer is THE STUPIDEST RULE IN SPORTS. Can you imagine a football or basketball player outrunning a defensive player having the ball passed to him and being called back because he was able to get past the defensive player? In soccer if all a defender has to do to take away an offensive players speed advantage is move forward. The soccer enthusiasts will say it prevents offensive players from just camping out in front of the goal, I say learn to defend it if a player camps out in front of the goal. Stupid, stupid rule.

They only have the offsides rule in place so it is easier to hide the "unathletic" kids that are part of the team.

I'm not worried about the "it's boring" crowd. It's fine. Not everyone has to like the things I like.

I also enjoyed "Mad Men" on TV, the music of Tomas Luis de Victoria, and books by Stephen King. Not everyone does. That's fine.

But the anti-soccer crowd can be hilarious sometimes. They will NEVER pass up an opportunity to tell you just how horrible that 'dumb commie kickball' is.

As a fan of other sports, you typically don't have to defend your sport. The soccer fans always try to justify how hard and how difficult it is. True athletes get tired of hearing it and it sparks the attacks on the game from those that understand just how sub par the game really is.

1. I would love to see football and basketball players play soccer...in the spring. Placing soccer in direct competition with both excludes some of the best athletes in the state.

2. Soccer is just as dangerous is football and would be more so if the bigger, stronger athletes played like they do in football.

3. The game needs an update. Allow offsides, widen the goals, shorten the pitch, add more players...just something to increase the scoring.

I'd love to see it in the spring also. For whatever reason, at least in the south, I think Kentucky is the only state where high school soccer season is in the fall. I think you'd see a good deal of football kids playing soccer and vice versa & I couldn't think of a better sport to compliment each other.

In these rural, county schools that have started soccer..their football programs have taken a hit. I don't know the first thing about soccer, except for a couple things & the first is...if you or your team is good, then you better be able to run. Like football, the game for sure isn't played in a telephone booth.

You look out there and see 20-30 kids playing soccer and not just 20-30 kids, but 20-30 lean, athletic looking kids who can run decent. Fact is, at a lot of these rural places, there just aren't many kids walking the halls like that. Now, do all 20-30 of them play? Nope. But, I bet that without soccer, there would be 5-15 of them. 5-15 that could help out immensely on the football field.

Mom said it, so it must be true. smh

I firmly believe that if the soccer games had better concessions, it would be more accepted by the football crowd.

Are you joking or do you really believe that?

Do you just support football?

I don't try to defend the sport, because those who are against it will never be swayed. That's fine.

EPL is on in my house every Saturday and Sunday, often at the expense of football. The play is fantastic.

I LOVE college football, but I can't tell you who is playing Saturday night. But I can tell you US Men's National team is playing Mexico in a critical match to qualify for Confederation Cup, and I'll be tuning in.

I've been around sports all of my life and have a fair appreciation for all expect Soccer and Tennis.

Soccer, as played at the high school level, is a BAD product. The field is too long and everything is contested one-on-one. With the myriad of changes of possession, there is no continuity to the game. At the World Cup level there is some semblance of order in that the players respect each other, and they play together as a team.

Soccer is obviously popular with the kids, as they turn out in droves to play it, but they should never require people to come and watch. I truly feel that these kids are victims of their environment.

I just returned from Ireland where Hurling is the major sport, all of the way down to the pee-wees. This is an example to me that you will play whatever sport you grow up with. If soccer is prevalent then they play soccer, if hurling is the sport du jour where you live then you hurl.

I follow/broadcast soccer for one reason and one reason only - Because it is important to our kids/players. Personally I think the game sux, and will bring my hours of watching soccer up on judgement day, because I think it will be worth some time off.

I'm rolling my eyes so hard I think they're actually making noise.

I think, for the most part, it is "all or nothing" on both sides. You either love it or you hate it and you can't stand that another person is mildly interested in it. I don't love all of soccer. I loathe the fake injuries/flopping for calls (my son constantly does this and I want to yank him off of the field each time). On the other hand, most refs won't call a foul unless you fall down, which is frustrating as well.

I also dislike both extremes. Soccer is boring and you can't use your hands. I don't ever want to watch it. Then you have, "You don't understand the game." like it is studying Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Then you translate over the words from England like "pitch," "pass the ball with pace," the overabundance of Mercedes, BMW's, and Lexus in the parking lot of a game and Dad's wearing croakies on the sideline and you have a pretentiousness that is tough to get over.

Let's just say this. Soccer is a fun game. It is a game of space, movement, passing that to play at a high level requires incredible speed, quickness, endurance, and technique. It can be extremely frustrating to watch at lower levels, but very enjoyable at higher levels (LIKE EVERY OTHER SPORT). Most of our best athletes DO NOT play the sport, but there are still a ton of very good athletes playing the game. It is what it is, but you can just "like" the sport. You don't have to either love it or hate it.

If I'm allowed to guard him, why would I care where he stands. Should we have offsides in basketball too...a sport that IMO soccer is closer to. Continuous movement in soccer vs. multiple stoppages in play for football. Also, the ball changes hands frequently in soccer without stoppages.

For me, having a goalie and not allowing a player to break away is like having an extra defender in basketball that stay in the paint all the time. In soccer, you already have someone protecting the goal and if you don't want someone alone down by the goal, it's your job to protect it and guard that person! Just like every other sport. Maybe if you were allowed to spread the field more, there would be more scoring and interest.
