It's interesting, my son plays college football and has never played soccer yet he has 2 soccer flags hanging in his dorm room. Chelsea and Manchester.

 

I would say the NUMBER 1 reason that most kids that never played soccer enjoy it is b/c FIFA by EA Sports is easily the most entertaining sports game. It is the easiest sports game to play, fun, and you learn a ton about the different leagues.

I never understood the need of the soccer haters to always voice why they hate soccer and why football is better. Or that soccer players aren't atheletes. I played football in high school and college, love the sport, but I also find soccer very intriguing. It is my second favorite sport. To think that these boys who play soccer could not play football because of size or athleticism is ridiculous. Most of the wrs, qbs, rbs, and dbs that I played college football with had extensive soccer experience. Most love the sport and credited soccer for their footwork. I find baseball boring and cricket confusing but would never bash the sports or players. It takes a special and committed athelete to excel in any sport. BTW I remember reading something a few months ago where it stated that soccer was on average the 2nd favorite sport among people 25 and younger and that the MLS average attendance is better than basketball or baseball. To brush it aside as not a real sport because of some weird childish attitude is just ridiculous, grow up.

I think just responding to the dumb comments gives him to much credit. Both are great sports- growing up never gave soccer much thought because I didn't know the game- really wish I would have played- last 10 plus years watching my sons play high level soccer really drove me to understanding the game. Great game great athletes.

Well a little of both. I played soccer a long long time ago and also coached it. So I was always a soccer guy. My son however always played the other 3 major sports because he could without overlapping eachother. Soccer and Football was the same time of the year so he had to choose when he started and once he played football in 1st grade he never thought about dropping it for soccer. Then the reason he fell in love with it was because I would always watch the World Cup and Olympic Soccer, especially the womens because the US womens teams are always more entertaining and better soccer than the US mens. But then we also got EA sports FIFA and that kept him interested also. So it's a combination of all of it. I got him into the European soccer with my favorite player Messi.

I think that a lot of that has to do with ticket prices.

Maybe but you can get Reds tickets for $5/10 not too expensive. Pacer tickets weren't too bad last time I went on par with Columbus Crew tickets.

Soccer is an incredible sport. I've coached youth soccer for almost 10 seasons now and it is far from boring.

 

Anyone who says it is boring doesn't fully understand the sport. There's a lot more to it than scoring goals.

I think it's too hard for a non soccer fan to tell what good soccer player is. County and City School soccer is very different. County Soccer player might average 3 goals a game, a City Soccer player doesn't even average one Goal per game(competition/speed) and they're the D1 player, but you can't really tell. I can watch Men and Womens World Cup and not tell a difference in speed or style of play(Unless they were to play each other)
