Mark Stoops says Drew Barker will play vs EKU

Featured Replies

I don't disagree with Stoops commitment to stick with one QB. However, I think his handling of the situation has been poor to say the least. He first told Drew that he would see time in the first 3 games. That didn't happen. He then said Drew would play for sure against EKU and that didn't happen either. He then goes on to say in his post-game press conference that he really thought hard about bringing Drew in when Towles was struggling. Then last night on his radio show he says that had they brought Drew in they would have lost the game.

Whether or not they would have lost, who knows. What I do know though, is that if I were Drew or his family I would be getting pretty fed up with this stuff. If Drew is not going to play, that's fine. The coaches just need to be straight up with him and stop putting him through these mind games. The only thing it's doing is shaking his confidence.

What about PT? This is a distraction that Towles shouldn't have to deal with. He already has the weight of the world on him, why add more? Stoops is running this team like a circus. Then Boom, remember him, who knows what Stoops is going to do with him?

Phillips will be the 2nd string qb next year behind Towles.

Is Barker ready to transfer?

Should have never went to UK in the first place, but thats a topic for another thread.

Why is this thread still going? Barker should have played but UK laid an egg and he didn't get a chance. That is not Barkers fault though. If anything I think the coaches might have learned a lesson about keeping their mouths shut leading up to the game/s.

Maybe, just maybe, Stoops is trying to keep Drew engaged in this team and focused on his job, not his extra curricular activities that seem to keep his name in the news.

Listen, Stoops could have easily put Drew in to start the 3rd quarter and I believe EKU would have won. Pat did a great job in the comeback win.

As long as Drew doesn't get a snap this season it would make a transfer more likely for next season.

There would be zero benefit really to Drew to transfer after this year. If he transfers he will have to sit out next year anyways, which would be the same as if being the backup QB behind Towles for another year. Realistically the only time transferring may have been a benefit would have been to transfer after last year. However now there is no reason to. The main thing for him to do is to keep working his butt off to keep getting better and be ready to play when his name is called whenever that may be.

Did NCAA drop the rule if you drop to a lower level, you don't have to sit?

Yes if he went to an FCS but it's not happening.

Yes but as I said there is zero benefit for him to do that. Yes he could drop down a level and start playing right away next year. Or he can wait another year if he doesn't get the job before that, and be the starting QB on an SEC team. Even though it would possibly suck having to wait, it still benefits him more by staying then leaving to go down a level.

I just wish UK would have blown EKU out so we don't have to wait until Charlotte to see Drew.

Why do you say that?

Knew PT was there and projected to be the starter long term (at the time), could have picked another place where he had a better chance to start sooner.

So you think you know what's best for a kid better than he or his family does? He's going to have a minimum of 2 years as a starter here. That's about what every major program has with their QB. You sit and learn your 1st season or two and then play the last two.

That's the thing that people seem to forget. PT was not to impressive his first two years and even struggled to learn the playbook people said. Which is one of the reasons they red shirted Towles his second year in college. However Towles put in a lot of hard work and probably even surprised the coaches they way he came back his third year in college to earn the job last season. Don't forget Stoops and his staff didn't bring PT in, Joker Phillips did. PT was not one of Stoops guys. So I don't think the coaches even thought PT would improve enough to win the job when they were going after Barker. Which is a credit to PT for putting in the work to show he should be the starter.

Which is why I hate when people act like since Barker is not starting that means he won't be a good qb. It took PT until this third year in college to be the man. Before that many people had given up on him too.

False. Patty Ice was brought in by Joker. Nobody knew who the starter was going to be when Stoops took over. I seem to recall that Pat didn't get a chance to start until someone got hurt and then he got hurt didn't he? And last season didn't someone get hurt before the season started which allowed Pat to get the job by default?

Let's not act like it was a given that Pat was going to be the starting QB. Hell, it wasn't a given this season.
