After watching the hit I have mixed feelings. It isn't very often that a LB gets to hit a QB, so I do understand him wanting to make a play on him. On the other hand, it does look like it he had time to see the slide and should not have taken the shot. I don't think he should have been thrown out of the game for targeting (which I heard he wasn't so I agree there) but I probably would have flagged it.

Because he's the quarterback. They all are victims of cheap shots (unfortunately). Some are better at covering up or avoiding them, or do not have a previous injury to aggravate.

 

It doesn't seem like you see other teams QBs be the target of cheap shots week after week.

It was a targeted play with specific malicious intent. The defender planted both feet and launched himself into a QB that was well into his slide. There was no "freak" about it.

 

QB goes into slide. Defender launches off both feet and aims at the head of the QB. It was targeting in every sense of the word...

Based on the video in that link alone it doesn't look like targeting. The defensive player was committed to hitting him, and actually turned to hit him with his shoulder, but when Kiel started his slide it lowered his head to the contact zone. I'd like to see a better angle or even slow motion version.

He got dinged up last week also, I'm surprised he was fully cleared to play. He's now had two "head injuries" in two weeks.

I agree some seem to get it more than others. I am not close enough to UC's program to know why he would be one of those unless it is known that a good hit will put him out.

 

I will add, that strategy backfired...the backup guy is really good!

Agreed. I think people who are fans of him are a little biased. His slide looks awkward and half committed. I don't think the hit was dirty.

It appears to me that he was aiming at his head, not sure what other part of the body the defender expected to hit the way he went in.

I don't think it was dirty either. Just the unfortunate side of football. Hope he is able to play again.

It wasn't dirty. Just upset fans of UC football because they lost. Its an excuse. Yes its unfortunate what happened as I actually like to watch Kiel play however, the hit was not malicious and was not targeting.
