Worst Thing A Coach Forced/Asked You To Do?

Featured Replies

I've been following a story in the 12th Region about a dance coach forcing dancers to run barefoot on hot blacktop. At least one dancer's feet were hurt so badly that she has giant blisters and was held out of a football game last Friday night.

That got me to thinking...what is the worst thing a coach ever made you do (without mentioning any names or even schools)? I don't mean it to cause big controversies around the state, but I am curious.

For me, I've seen a team forced to run until they puked. I've seen a player be told to "run until I can't see you anymore" on the football field. I've seen a coach tell his players to do an 11-man rush on an opposing QB before the snap. And I've seen a coach tell his players to blow a kicker's knee out when he was in the kicking motion (take out the leg on the ground).

Anyone care to share a story or two?

All of them are bad enough, but as to the bolded...if I ever heard a coach say this I would do everything in my power to have him brought up on charges.

Junior high football- I started playing in the 6th grade...we weren't a very good team, and during the season a couple of the older players quit. Our coach was really upset so we ran 50 or so 50 yd. wind sprints in full gear in Memphis on a 90+ degree day. At the end of every sprint, he asked us if anyone else wanted to quit. All of us who were on that team talked about it for our careers even through high school. When we finally stopped that day, we were all dry heaving...we had nothing to throw up.

I'm not sure what ever happened to that particular coach. That was almost 25 years ago and I still think about it often.

I have also seen a football coach "punish" a player by having him take a hit from every other player on the team (lined up in a row, one after the other).

Sr. year, coach made me run for about a half hour without stopping because I was 2 minutes late for baseball practice.

BTW, NO ONE was ever late for practice after that. :lol2:

The worst thing a coach ever asked me to do was go in the game.

I know a Band Director that made his band perform barefoot on a turf field on a 90+ degree day, and many got severe burns on their feet. All because one person forgot their shoes.

It's not a thread. I've been following it from the parents on Facebook. I'm not sure if things like that are allowed to be mentioned on here since it's allegations from parents vs. a high school.

I had an Oline coach who wore cleats to practice. He Lined up next to me to demonstrate how to mesh on a zone block. When he made his first step he stepped right onto my foot and about ripped my pinky toe off. Very painful rest of the season. He switched to gym shoes after that.

Senior year a few of us got caught drinking during spring ball. After a full practice about 10 of us did up downs, suicides, railroads, rolled (which was awful), duck walks, bear crawls and sprints. It lasted about an hour and a half and none of us wanted to look at alcohol again.

Shark bait wrestling drill.

And it wasn't punitive, just came with the territory. Those of us that had a strong masochistic streak would go in against much heavier wrestlers.

I watched a baseball coach tell a bunch of 2nd and 3rd graders they were old enough to lift weights once.
