HC pitchers Ryan and Busse struggled, not sure who the 3rd pitcher was.

 

CCH pitcher Mike Stephens threw an excellent game, I'm not sure how many of the runs were earned.

Good recap of the game fballstud06. The only thing to add is young Maile also hit a monster of a Home Run over the right center field fence a distance of about 375 feet... Good game by the Colonels, and Holy Cross as usual, didn't let the Colonels coast to the win, as with a little luck they just might have come back again in the sixth..... Fun game to watch.....

Defensively, in defense of the kids...that infield is rough! I know Schriever has struggled at times this year, but tonight, he did a fine job of trying to deal with a mess in the 6 hole. You never knew where the ball was going to hop at any spot...I know this is NK not South Florida, but that infield is a disaster imo....Maile had 5 or 6 rbis...good luck Colonels...

Wanna know what was going through my mind today when Covington Catholic freshman catcher Luke Maile hit a 375-foot opposite field bomb to seal up the Colonels' 12-8 victory in the 35th District semifinal game against Holy Cross?

 

Not, "Wow, that ball was hit hard."

 

Not, "Wow, this game's over."

 

Not even, "Wow, I'm glad my car's not parked out there."

 

I thought, "Great, I'm going to have to interview a freshman." Sadly, that's how the mind of a sportswriter works.

 

Not that I have anything against 15-year-old males. Heck, I used to be one. I remember what it was like. I couldn't converse my way out of a wet paper bag.

 

But at 15, I was no Luke Maile. I'm not even now. Not only is Maile one of the best young ballplayers I've seen in a long time. He's also one of the most eloquent. He's one of those great-handshake-look-you-in-the-eyes kind of kids. He was a better quote than most coaches. He spoke about the homer, the team, his coach, the seniors. I think he even quoted Thoreau.

 

OK, maybe not. But he's a very impressive kid. And we'll be hearing plenty from him over the next few years.

As I sat and watched the game tonight and walked a few blocks to my car I kept thinking, "I just watched the coming out party of THE NEXT BIG MAN ON CAMPUS AT CCH."

 

I believe he had 5 RBI's and went 3 for 4 tonight. The Home Run was estimated at 375ft but some say it landed in the Licking River.

 

I've watched Luke Maile play basketball as a fresh and now baseball. Like Bill Walker of NCH, someone needs to check his birth certificate. This kid doesn't act, or look like a freshman. He has a big frame and runs like a deer for a kid that size. I can only imagine how many football coaches and players at CCH ask him to come out for the team in the fall. What a great TE or LB he would make.

 

I sat next to Matt Ellison, younger brother of Quarterback Drew Ellision, the 5th Grader made this statement to me which made me think. "I can't wait to see him when he is senior"

 

It won't be long before his name is on this recent history list of great hitters like Tim Grogan, Sean Ryan, Rob Quast, Eric Severson, Andrew Blazejewski, possibly Blesser and then Luke Maile.

No, Chris Farrell was going to start tommorrow no matter what. I believe he sat the whole game tonight and didn't even catch an inning because they want him fresh. Michael Stephens struggled at times tonight, but ended up coming through with a very nice performance. He gave them innings and thats what they asked. He went 5 1/3 I believe but pitched somewhere around 110-125 pitches. Most came in the the 3rd inning where he threw close to 40 pitches and got touched up for 4 runs I believe.

Infield was pretty rough...holy cross got most of their runs off of bad hops that would skip over a cch defenders head at the last minute or would just shoot through a hole. Great game by both teams though. Holy Cross battled back and didnt give up, but came up jus short. Luke Maile is a player. I saw him rip a triple in the right center field gap and by the time the ball was coming in, he was half way to third.He has some speed on the basepaths, plays with a lot of enthusiasm and is a flat out player. Stevens struggled at times w/ his control but his defense bailed him out. pretty solid game by both teams in my opinion but covcath just got a couple more bounces than the indians. Good luck to the colonels against beechwood
