Great game by all the colonels.... and all I can say about Luke Maile is WOW!

Stephens threw A LOT of pitches. Got out of most of his jams, but still got hit. He took quite a few batters to full count.

Stephens and Ryan threw a lot of pitches b/c the home plate umpire had a strike zone the size of a cracker box. He had the same zone in the CCH vs. St. Henry game. He doesn't seem to realize there's corners on those plates....inside and outside.

Agreed, but the good thing was he was calling it that way at least at the CovCath vs. Cov Holy Cross game both ways..... If both teams understand the umps strike zone (no matter what it is) then so be it, but to have a umpire calling it different against each hitter or ining, even if he is calling it the same way against both teams, that is what drives me nuts. If you don't have a wide strike zone then call it that way the entire game (which this umpire did) don't like it but......

Yes, I do think he was consistent both ways in the CCH/Holy Cross game, but the St. Henry game was a different story. I think the ump has too many ties to St. Henry to call a fair game. I think next time he should gracefully decline to call a St. Henry game. He is just to close to the St. Henry sources.

Clearly safe? From the way I remember, the boy didn't even make it to the plate. Must have had a bad angle.

As I said, we must have had a different angle. I didn't see him even get to the plate. I also didn't notice Walt even slightly questioning the call. Maybe he and I had the same angle.

Also, you're saying the umpire was so bad that he called a kid out who was "past the plate before the ball even got there"? Heck, he must have been on his way back to the dugout by the time the ball arrived, right?

 

Come on, dude. You can say he was safe but don't go off the deep end with an exaggeration like that.

Was at the game sitting behind home plate, and Maile had him dead as he blocked the plate. What you might not have seen, or forgetten, was that Maile was up the third base line about a step or two, and the SHDHS player never touched the plate. Good call by Blue and great tag by the CovCath Freshmen Catcher.

I know CruFan4233is obviously a St. Henry fan and that is fine, but Mr. Rolf was fraternizing with the St. Henry coaches and players quite a bit during that game. It just doesn't look good from the other side of the field. I know it looks okay from your side.

Ironically, I talked to "Mr. Rolf" about why he did that game since his daughter is a student at St. Henry. The reason was because his "day job" only allows his to do later games (7pm vs. 5pm games). Therefore, he was available for the 7pm game while no other umpires were available. If "Mr Rolf" han not done that game, the game would not have had a second umpire.

 

Also, when Walt came down the line after Maclaine slid into home and got tagged by Luke Maley, according to the umpire, the first words out of Walt's mouth were "He never got to the plate... did he??". Walt must have seen the same thing the ump saw, which obviously, you would not have seen from directly behind the backstop, since Maclaine slid to the front side of the plate.

 

Lastly, I know Mr. Rolf pretty well and he has just as many ties to Cov Cath folks (if not more) than he does to St. Henry folks. He admitted that he shouldn't be doing the game at all (due to ties with both teams), but the KHSAA does not allow varsity games to go with only 1 umpire, and this game would have been cancelled had he not been able to work the game.

 

Interesting once you hear the .... rest of the story!!!!!

 

Overall great game though. Great sportsmanship, great atmosphere, great playmaking, blah blah blah..... This game (St. Henry vs. Cov Cath) what a great setting for high school baseball.
