Grant County and Boone County tied at 0-0. Boone possessed the ball at least 60-40 and had more opportunities on goal. Boone's defense was pretty solid. This match saw lots of substitutions. At one point in the first half Boone brought in 8 players at once.

 

One thing that I did see was that Boone was working at possessing the ball. Their passing was pretty good and their movement was better than I've seen at Boone. In the past, Boone relied on a few players who could go and get the ball and turn it into a shot on goal. This group plays more as a team working the ball up the field and getting in position to score. They did get in position but did not find net. I think that will come.

 

Kudos to the players and coaches for good progress at this point in the season.

Any list for Highlands starts with Brady Gesenhues. Realize the coaches do not like his game, but from what I have seen the last year or so he is every bit the player Garbig was.

Gesenhuse is a very good player and will be one of the key players for Highlands this fall. He's got game and I wouldn't argue with anyone putting him on their top ten list.

 

The only two players I've seen thus far in the current NKY high school crop who are "Garbig-good" are Day and Snow. But it's early, I haven't seen nearly all play yet, and I'm always ready to have my mind changed.

Good to hear as I know there were times last year where he was buried in the back. Has plenty of ball skills to not only score goals, but to set up his teammates for opportunities.

These kinds of lists are always very subjective. I think it would be amiss if we didn't mention quite a few players not on this list. Kareem Elgusain from Ryle is probably one of the best players in the ninth region. He's a senior. Will Bedel junior goalie from Ryle. Griffin Lamb, Mike Vogt, and Steven Schutt from CCH all juniors. Tate Johnson a senior from St Henry is their keeper. By the end of the year we may look back and say he is the best keeper in NKy. DJ Sanders and Ian Manahan from St Henry are both juniors. Grant Perkins a junior from CC. Mike Dewald a junior from I think Pendleton county. This is probably not a complete list but is a very good start.

I'm sure it's early for this list. As for positions, I'm sure you are right. It's customary in HS soccer to move players out of the position they are most suited naturally, to play them where the coach (or player in some instances) thinks they'll have the most "impact" - often moving midfielders up top and defenders into the midfield or up top. I'd prefer to see kids playing their natural positions and being given options that get them into offense on set pieces or in the run of play when there's opportunity. I'm not identifying any particular team here (honestly) but we frequently see teams who have "best defender in NKY" on their team and yet play them elsewhere so they can have more impact. Maybe right, maybe wrong. I'd just rather see them playing where they are "best" unless the team has no suitable options where they are being moved.

 

I would agree, players are sometimes put in positions to help the team vs their natural position. I really don't know but given the emergence on CCH of some good defenders, I would think Day/Wessels will be in the central midfield w/ Day as the offensive center and Wessels as the holding/defensive mid but it's possible one of them is given a look up top as well. Those midfield spots are really their natural positions on the field. I can also see CCH going w/ the 5 midfielder look similar to what Scott did last night given the wealth of talent and speed they have in that position. There is no true striker on CCH to be honest. I'm not sure there is one of a high level in N. Ky this year.

 

I get what both of you are saying and agree with your comments. I think many of the HS coaches have limited options and are forced to play some of these players in a position that they are not normally playing with their club team in order to help raise the overall level of their teams.

 

One example I can think of is Devin Morgan, I have seen him play both HS and Club ball and I feel that he is one of the best mid-fielders in our area. Because of the players that Scott has this season it looks like they might be forced to play him at forward, it might not be his natural... or best position... but playing him there might give Scott their best chance of winning.

 

I actually feel that there are a few quality Strikers in our area, however, they will probably not all play there for their team this season. I also think that what people call a striker can be subjective depending on the formations that teams use. From my perspective, being able to score goals at a rate of more than one per match would qualify you as a true striker. I am aware of 2 such boys in NKY that perfomed at this level for their club teams this past season but I believe that only one of them will be playing there for their HS team.
