As far as your question as what is different this year over last, I think there is a lot more uncertainty at the QB spot (maybe unwarrented) going into this year. Hergott might turn in a great season, but there is just not much to go on if he will have a great, good or bad year. It is going a lot of fun watching this team from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.

The strength of the offense however will be the fact that they return 3 lineman that started last year along with a bevy of receivers and running backs. These lineman imposed their will on people last year as the season went along. IF quarterback is a question mark, perhaps they become a more run oriented team this year with Kendall, Murray and Pulsfort returning in the backfield.

I agree Joat. But let me throw this at you. Do we feel that if they do resort to relying on the run, are they still a quick scoring team? Meaning that in the past couple years, they have been able to out score teams and not worry as much about how strong the defense was. Now in defense of the defense, HHS scored so fast most of the time, the defense spent a lot of time on the field! So that had a lot to do with some thinking the defense was not as good. But if they turn to a more run oriented team and that slows the scoring down a little, are they going put more emphasis on stopping teams, since they may not be able to out score everyone this year?

 

All hypothetical at this point! I have all the confidence in the world that they will adapt to whatever they need to do because I've seen it time and time again and they have the O line to do whatever they want!

If you were to look back at last year, the biggest question mark was the offensive line as all that had game experience graduated except for one and he was hurt going into the first game. We all know how that worked out. Defensively they return LB's in the middle that saw extensive game action last year, but not sure many people noticed. The secondary returns two guys that played as well. Defensive line returns a guy that has played the last two years and then there are always guys that have had to stand around and wait their turn.

 

You never know if there have been some position changes as well to bolster what some might have perceived as being a weakness.

To go with field position, I would add kick coverage as well. In those rare instances when there wasn't a touch back, Elder and Columbus were able to get very solid returns. It won't be that big of an issue against most of their schedule, but it could factor in against St. X and when the weather changes.

That is the problem you have when kickoff does not make the endzone and you have young and inexperienced kids on the coverage team. They should get some valuable work next week in the scrimmage. Goal has to be 100% touchbacks unless a called onside kick.

Somebody tell me about Pulaski. What is their style? Run, pass, both?? Are they built more on power or speed? More of a defensive force or offensive?? I don't know much about them..

 

Pulaski County is led by a very talented group of seniors who were state runners up as SO, Champs as JRs and looking to repeat as SR's. Riley Hall, QB, is rightfully the face of the team and should be in the running for Mr. Football but the strength of the team is the depth of talent. The team is solid in all facets, running passing and kicking and while no one area will blow your doors off there also isn't a real weakness either.

 

The offense is balanced and can be explosive and the defense led 5A in points allowed most of last season. 19 of 22 starters return from last years team.

A handful of us Purple fans a few years ago got upset when the class alignments changed. Many in our camp truly believed that those Purples teams were the ones that could have dethroned Highlands. I know the haters will speak up against.

 

With that said, yes, Pulaski can hang this year with Highland and Purples. I still think Highlands or Purples will beat them by 2+ touchdowns this season (much more than that in upcoming seasons).

 

BG will be good enough to pull out another championship but the stars will have to align pretty good (no injuries, defense gel quickly, QB play well when needed....). If Purples can get past Owensboro, I'm guessing they meet Highlands in finals.

 

Dragon fire is king of stats but very few teams score 40 points against Purples. I just can't see the score of most Highlands games being what they normally are against the Purples.

 

This year it will be a crapshoot. The next 4 years will be classic games between these 2 respected teams. Highlands would get nod this year but my boys in Purple are 1 season away from having another incredible run
