Reds @ Cardinals (7/27-7/29)

Dominguez wasn't on the ML roster.

Sorry I was thinking of Bourgeios being on the roster. Two very forgettable names I guess. This move really makes no sense unless they are getting ready to trade Pena or Barnhart is going on leave of some sort??? Skipworth was hitting .237 at Pensacola AA.

My understanding is this.

Reds had one open spot on 40 man to start with.

Trading Cueto is 2.

Dominguez DFA is 3.

When you make a trade, and the guys you trade for were on the other teams 40 man roster, they have to be on the receiving teams 40 man roster. So all 3 pitchers are on the 40 man, I think.

Skipworth was already on the 40 man roster so his issue was just getting on the 25 man roster. Cuetos spot.

That makes sense then if he was already on the 40 man but how can he help them as a hitter? Don't they have anyone who can hit at Louisville? He apparently has a little pop with 9 HRs in the minors. Who knows what they are thinking giving him a couple of days in the bigs!!

He has the third highest avg on team and an OBP of .345. And a great clubhouse guy and helps with the Spanish speakers. So for a back up catcher/fill in, he is excellent.

Pena's first two at-bats tonight illustrate my point with an exclamation mark. The guy simply cannot drive in runs, yet Price has him hitting 5th tonight, ahead of Byrd and Suarez. Makes zero sense.

I think he was the only guy with MLB time on the 40 man not on the 25 position player wise. Could be wrong.

Skipworth was added for an extra bat until they need to add the arm to take Cueto's spot which I'm guessing might be Lamb. Dominguez was DFA'd to create room for one of the newly acquired pieces. Skipworth was a former 1st Round pick and is a boom or bust hitter, he has some pop and that's about it. He's also a mess behind the plate although he has a good arm. Still just 25 years old he was brought up for some needed pop off the bench for a few games, he was recently named Southern League Player of the Week recently when he hit .313 with 4 HR's and 9 RBI's. Over a 10 game stretch extending a little further he hit 7 of his 9 HR's on the season. Simply a case of being hot at the right time and the Reds being in a position to add an extra bat for a few days.

They have Boesch and Negron available as well. Both guys are on the 40 man and have MLB service time.

Thanks that clears it up for me.

They said they brought Skipworth up so they could pinch hit either Barnhart or Pena and still have a back up catcher if they needed it.

I don't mind trading the guy but he is a back up/fill in guy. He was not supposed to start this year. He is a great bench/clubhouse guy. Pena is not your everyday catcher next season.

Completely forgot about him, he's in AAA,right?

Cards do what they do and beat the Reds. One bad pitch was the game.

Yeah, he's been playing well down there.
