Support that argument. I want to see a comparison and logical explanation.

If Highlands wins state this year they need to build a statue of Weinrich out in front of the school..The Birds lost a ton and don't have a lot to back it up with in my opinion. A bunch of question marks need to be answered for me. Now with me saying this they will probably go undefeated and win state by 4tds..lol

Why do we assume that injuries are more likely to happen when playing against a higher quality opponent. I may need to be convinced of that. Does CovCath have a high percentage of players that go both ways, especially on the line? I would concede that a team that plays essentially the same 12-15 guys on offense and defense would be more prone to injury against a team that 2-platoons using 22 -25 guys. Injuries are certainly more likely to happen when players are exhausted and physically overwhelmed. But I have seen many players injured in "laugher" games as well.

Are the players at Cincy St. X and Sycamore bigger and stronger than CovCath? Do they have significantly more players on the team? Or is it more the case of never getting a "cupcake" week to rest guys that are banged up so they don't get injured? I do know that the Colonels have been bitten by the injury bug pretty consistently the past couple years but is it only to be attributed to a tough schedule?

This is different than a small school like Beechwood or NCC, without the numbers to 2-patoon, taking on a consistent schedule of 5A and 6A schools when they simply don't have the "horses" to compete, or at least enough "horses". However, those two schools do get the 4 week district schedule to heal where the Colonels don't.

Did this type of schedule begin with the prior coach that came from the GCL? I think they could swap out maybe 2 of these type games for a Conner, Boone, Cooper, Scott or Campbell Co.

It's a killer schedule and it could hurt them. Teams like St X are so deep can run fresh horses out there all day long with little to no drop off and it does increase chances of someone getting banged up. I too am for a tough schedule but this is a little over the top

Proof is in the pudding.

Highlands' games against Boone County and Grant County are no contest. Copper, Campbell, Dixie, and Cov Cath are all well below "top tier" this year. That's 6 out of 10 games that are below top tier. Scott County is pretty top notch, as is Simon Kenton. Ryle is borderline top notch...we'll see as the season progresses. St. X (Lou) is easily top tier.

Cov Cath has Highlands, St. X (Cincy), and Columbus DeSales that are all easily top tier. They have the same Scott County, Ryle, Dixie, and Grant County matchups, plus games against very tough Lex Cath and Sycamore. Beechwood is even a decently tough one (although very winnable for the Colonels).

Not saying that Highlands is going to be less of a team for their schedule, but saying that they have the toughest schedule in NKY is patently false.

I have a question for you and would love for you to explain. You say "Copper, Campbell, Dixie, and Cov Cath are all well below "top tier" this year. " What makes you think that? I only ask because out of all the teams, including HHS and SK and Ryle, Cooper has probably lost the least to graduation last year. They are returning just about their entire starting lineups on both offense and defense from a team that went all the way to the state semi finals last year. So I would love your explanation of that comment. I would think any team returning their entire starting lineups basically from a team that made it all the way to the state semi finals the previous year would hardly be considered "Far from top tier this year"

Obviously, in pre-season discussions, far too much emphasis is placed on last year's performance. It is a good point to consider not only the losses to graduation, but also what returns among players that had very little experience last year. For the general fan, it is not possible to have that type of intimate knowledge about programs other than the one you follow.

Hellbird is going to know much more about Cooper and what they return than most posters,

Colonels_Wear_Blue or colonel-fan will have a more in depth knowledge about CovCath.

Lawnboy and Mexitucky will have the scoop on the Breds and Voice of Reason is in the know about the Beechies.

If only there was someone that had information on Simon Kenton.......

Anyway, that's why the preseason hype and comments need to be taken with a grain of salt. There are certainly question marks all around Northern Kentucky and that's what makes following the whole NKY region so much more interesting than just following your own team. Sounds like a new thread topic.

It's fun discussion and we'll start to find answers in a month or so.

You know, one thing I've always been proud of about CCH. We aren't wusses about it.

That's what I say. Suck it up Blueboys and maybe this schedule will make men out of you! I wish you good luck up until week #8 . :thumb:

Top tier: Trinity, St. Xavier, Highlands, and maybe another team or two around the state. You could add on some additional teams if you want to look outside of Kentucky state lines.

I'm just trying to give an honest evaluation of the team's quality when matched up to others around the state. As much as I do like Cooper (and I do), chances are they wouldn't fair well against the likes of Highlands, Trinity, Louisville St. X, Cincinnati St. X, Elder, Colerain, Moeller, or LaSalle. As much as I think Cooper is a good program and is going to have a good season (and I do), chances are they aren't going to be coming back from Bowling Green with the 6A championship trophy. Still, I see them being likely to be a solid 7-3 team in the regular season.

Dixie...again, they're going to be a solid program this year, but with everyone they graduated after last season and the new 5A district they're in, I think they're going to have a 5-5 or 6-4 regular season, and are unlikely to get past the second round of the playoffs.

Cov Cath. I don't know how many times I've said it on BGP here in the last handful of months, but I think their schedule is going to be more than they want this year. They're going to be replacing starter in several skill positions (including QB), and they're going to have an entirely new look as a result of the new coaching staff. I don't think they're going to be a "bad team", but I don't think they're going to be able to do much better than 5-5, or maybe 6-4 if they're lucky. And as much as I hope I'm wrong, I don't see them making it past the second round of the playoffs.

Campbell County. Coach Lickert is doing great things in Claryville, and Campbell County is likely to have a 6-4 of 7-3 season, but again, they aren't too likely to make it to Bowling Green.

I'm sorry that you don't like me saying that those teams are well below top tier, but when the gold standard is being set by the Trinity, St. X, Highlands, and the big boys in Cincinnati....the Jaguars, Camels and the two Colonels are looking a lot more like silver.

I can agree with that. I didn't take it as a shot at all, I was genuinely curious what your definition of top toer was when you said Cooper is far from being top tier. Your definition would include every single NKY team then outside Highlands and I can agree with that. I was just curious as to your definition of that seeing how a team you said want close to top tier although in their short 6 year existence has made it to semi final and state final game twice in last 3 years.

Reading your our original post you didn't mention schools like SK or Dixie or every other school in NKY that can't beat Trinity so was puzzled is all.

It it was just the "Not close to top tier" that sounded a little off is all. That's why I asked. Again your criteria would include every single NKY team outside Highlands so that makes sense. I still wouldn't say far from top tier for some though.

Believe me, I wouldn't be happier to chow down on a big plate of crow at the end of the season.

Just to give my two cents on whether Cov Cath or Highlands has the tougher schedule, I used the projected strength of the teams they are playing (Calpreps.com) to compare. Teams do change over the season (even assuming the projected strength is correct) but this gives a reasonable basis for comparison.

They share four opponents (Ryle, Dixie Heights, Scott County and Grant County) so those need not be considered.

Highlands faces: SK (41.4), Louisville St. X (36.8), Cov Cath (21.6), Campbell County (21), Cooper (20.8) and Boone County (6.8). An average of 24.7 (or 28.3 if you eliminate Boone's score as an outlier)

Cov Cath faces: Cincy St. X (60), Sycamore [OH] (39.8), St. Francis De Sales [OH] (36.9), Highlands (35.8), Beechwood (23.5) and Lex Cath (21.8). An average of 36.3 (or 31.6 if you eliminate Cincy St. X's score as an outlier).

Even if you discount Highland's lowest opponent and Cov Cath's highest one, Cov Cath is still rating a stronger schedule.

Although on a personal note, I believe Louisville St. X will be stronger this year than Calpreps thinks they will be.

Strange not to see Ryle in this conversation. Usually, they have the Colerains and LaSalles on their schedule.

Believe me, I wouldn't be happier to chow down on a big plate of crow at the end of the season.

Looking for a good year for the Colonels. No doubt the schedule is tough, and the Colonels may not win every game. However they need to say the course and keep getting better every week. The teams they will meet in the playoffs will be doing the same. Looking forward to this season no matter how challenging the schedule.

Go Colonels!
