Confederate flag is gone. Is New Orleans' iconic fleur de lis next?

The Confederate flag is down. Will Louisiana's fleur-de-lis be the next to go?

That's the question posed by some in New Orleans, who point to the emblem's previous connections to slavery as the reason why it must go.

The questions arose during a recent meeting of the New Orleans City Council where the removal of Confederate monuments was discussed. Rudy Mills, head of the grassroots group Remove Racist Images, said he'd like all vestiges of the slavery and Confederacy removed from the city. Mills said that includes the iconic fleur-de-lis.

"Check the history. It's also a very racist symbol," he told the council.

Take down any symbol of boats or cotton too please.

Absolutely. Like I said in the flag thread it was just the beginning. You are seeing it everywhere. Dukes of Hazard of the TV, Walmart no longer selling the flag, etc. Brace yourself because it's just getting started.

And big white houses and straw hats. While we are at it get rid of that Colonel Sanders guy also.

As long as there is Nascar, the Confederate flag will remain. The flag has a different meaning to so many different people. Not sure you can easily bundle all of those emotions in one nice little package.

They better close White Castles, Cracker Barrel and quit putting cotton in aspirin bottles.

Never knew that one. There are fleurs-de-lis on the civic crests of St. Louis and Louisville as well; probably several more. Anyone know if any fleur-de-lis branding went on in Kentucky or Missouri?

Is it okay for me to have a concrete black guy holding a latern in my front yard?

Ask @lawildcat

Is it okay for me to have a concrete black guy holding a latern in my front yard?

Thought you said "stoned" Instead of concrete

As a human I understand humanity's attachments and/or disapproval of symbolism on flags, but I can't help but to think that while being surveilled by some other intelligent life form from another planet they're not having a good laugh while scratching their heads asking each other why on God's green earth are those freaky humans getting so worked up about symbolism on pieces of flowing waving cloth? I mean like really, in the grand scheme of it all isn't there other way more important pressing matters at hand that need tending to than that?

I'm having a hard time accepting the fleur-de-lis as a racist symbol. I don't know of anybody who waves around fleur-de-lis flags as a sign of their desire for a return to the "good 'ol days, when blacks knew their place." Nobody uses the fleur-de-lis as an antagonistic symbol the way the Stars'n'Bars and the Nazi swastika symbols are used.

Honestly, I never knew of the fleur-de-lis ever being used in that fashion. And I know my history pretty well. Wasn't even mentioned in the Af-Am history class I took at NKU, and that was a pretty thorough class that focused heavily on slavery and its ripple effect through Jim Crow and beyond.

You ever seen "The Sand Pebbles"? Reminds me of that movie when Jameson's giving his spiel to the soldiers.

"Can't you see it's too late in the world for flags?"

I'm not familiar with the movie but you got me googlin' around looking for references or videos of it. Never came across any footage, however it did come up in quotes related to the movie.
