Coaches, please, support the Dead Period and discourage player run "optionals"

Families are forced to have vacations? Since when. Again why the need to have vacations?

Because some people actually value time away with their families.

To suggest that people should forego that to participate in high school sports is absurd, IMO.

Only rich/upper middle class people can take vacations during dead period. The Damontrays, Leons and Markels of the world ain't going anywhere during dead period. To the park maybe. Too expensive. Middle class families aren't taking vacation during dead period either.

No clue but the head coach of Casey County is the head coach of Team Manimal. I guess we'll find out in the coming weeks of dead period if he coaches his Team Manimal team that has two players from his Casey County team playing on it.

That is a violation to coach your players during the period.

Our baseball coach coach's a team during the summer. Lucky for him the tournament finished yesterday. If they had played to play tomorrow he would not be coaching them.

As a Coach, I like the dead period. Players will continue to work on their own and that is fine. But if they want to take a 2 week break then that is fine as well.

They don't have to go to Disney World for it to be a vacation. The point is that people shouldn't be penalized (which is exactly what would happen) for wanting a couple weeks off from sports. It's HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS for goodness sake. It's not that important for 95% of the athletes involved.

I had to schedule a vacation. It starts tomorrow. The Pres/CEO of the SBGPAA (Spindoc's BGP Addiction Association) aka my wife, has imposed a 10day dead period. Otherwise I'd keep sitting here at work between wisdom teeth and root canals and continue posting on BGP. It's really exhausting and the demands are extreme. So, no texts, posts, or contact directly with any members. I think it's silly, but it's the rule. So, I'll be out at days end. Stupid rule.

Way to leave me and UKfan for the football thread :lol2:

Again, for that 95% there is no need for a mandated 2 week lockout from school facilities and instruction if it's not that important.

Using football as an example, if kids are getting punished for missing voluntary workouts in June, then there are lots of kids in danger of not playing come fall.

My kids have jobs in the summer. And my oldest two have graduated, but both missed time in June in their respective sports (football and volleyball). In fact, my oldest son never attended June workouts in 4 years, because of work and summer baseball. They both still started and played. Fact of the matter is, if you can play, especially if you are REALLY good, no coach is going to punish you or not play you because you miss a week or two of June/offseason workouts. I'm not saying those workouts aren't important. They can be valuable. But I think many of us are underestimating many of our coaches. They are, for the most part, reasonable people, with families themselves. Sure there are few overzealous guys out there. But those guys are the exception, not the norm.

Yes they are. I used to see those families annually.

You're ignoring the punishment part of my stance. You and I both know that when kids didn't show up to summer workouts they would be penalized. They shouldn't be. That's my point.

I'm glad your boys were never penalized, and I wish all coaches were that way.

Unfortunately, they aren't.

Maybe I'm lucky my kids coaches were reasonable. Still, with numbers dropping in sports like football, it's things like "punishing" kids for missing voluntary workouts, that will eventually turn kids and parents off the sport. It's not fair to kids or families.

And I still think fall sports officially start way too early in this state. No reason to start school sports in the middle of July.

...and as such, your opinions about dead period are likely skewed. High school sports are not the same as they were even 10 years ago. Families that are "dedicated" are essentially forced to schedule their vacations during dead period, or risk putting Little Johnny on the bench.

If reasonable thinking about priorities both within families and schools were aligned, the KHSAA would not have imposed a dead period, it would have worked itself out.

The dead period was put in place because priorities are and have been skewed for some time. Saying you can take vacation whenever doesn't alleviate issues with these priorities, it puts everyone in a bad situation.

Just for the record: "everyone" doesn't necessarily know you don't have kids, most just probably assume

BB is 100% correct. Although I also didn't know UKMustang didn't have kids, I could have guessed as much. UKM is correct .. it should be a choice as to when kids/families take time away from a sport (I won't use the term "vacation") .. but unfortunately, that isn't always the case. Whether you want to believe you it or not, there is a reality that an athlete is "falling behind" if they don't participate in workouts. This is especially true for middle-of-the-road athletes, and that's where most kids fall.

UKM .. unless your kid is the stud of the team, if he/she misses workouts/training/team activities, they are falling behind, whether real or perceived. Dead period at least gives kids 2-3 weeks of mental break, in addition to a physical break. You'll find out in due time. Best of Luck!!

I agree with the bolded. And I wonder how many of the people that are arguing against the dead period actually have anything to do with HS sports other then being parents or fans?

Don't know. I'm not really arguing for or against the dead period. I don't believe it changes any behaviors, so I could care less if there is a dead period or not. The super dedicated kids will play/practice regardless. And the less dedicated won't save all the family fun for the dead period. All it does is keep the coaches out the kids ears for two weeks.

And lets start fall sports on August 1st like many other states.

This is a tangential comment, but is the placement of High School athletes into college athletic programs at all incentivized? Just curious if that is a driver for the year round calendar HS has evolved into.
