Coaches, please, support the Dead Period and discourage player run "optionals"

Featured Replies

The AAU/traveling sports loophole allows it. If a head coach of a high school team is also a head coach of an AAU team he can have players from his high school team on his AAU team and the AAU team will practice and play in tournaments during the Dead Period.

I'm not sure this is true.

I don't think the coach can coach/be involved during the dead period.

There is nothing REQUIRED by any sport in June. In fact...there isn't anything REQUIRED by any sport all year long. Kids voluntarily choose to play a sport. Nobody makes them play but they are made to stay away for 2 weeks in July? That's stupid as hell.

Come on PP, you're talking to a former athlete and coach here. You can't snow me, you know good and well the bolded isn't the case.

Because without the dead period they can be torn between the decision of taking little "Johnny" on vacation, letting him attend church camp, etc., or going to mandated practice knowing if he missies the coach will hold it against him and quite possibly levee some sort of punishment. Jimmy and Joey were at practice, why wasn't Johnny?

There are more than just one or two coaches out there who feel if little "Johnny" isn't practicing/working out/playing their particular sport 24/7/365, then they aren't dedicated and need to work harder. Lets not kid ourselves. I'm not saying it's the majority of coaches, but they do exist. Having the dead period takes the pressure of both parents and coaches, and how if can be viewed as anything but a good thing I don't understand.

False. My little Johnny is going to be sitting at home playing NBA 2K15 when he could and should be at the high school lifting weights and getting more tutelage from his coaches. Luckily for him we have a plan in place for him to improve his skills while everyone else is doing the same through their means.

He can actually come work out with me if he wants...guarantee he will benefit from it. But again that's the choice he makes during the dead period. Nothing wrong with that choice, just like there is nothing wrong with choosing to rest and recharge and recover either, which the dead period helps do.

If folks need the two weeks to rest and recharge then they are doing way too much.

And thanks for the offer but we got it under control. :thumb:

Dude, you know that's not what I'm saying. If they CHOOSE to play, then yes there are requirements they better meet if the want to participate. Not many coaches that I know of that let a kid come to practice when they want, do what they want, act the way they want and then play as much as they want.

Always willing to work with any kid that wants to work. Got some 7th graders working with me now. it's fun to watch them start to realize what work really is.:lol2:

So kids can skip all of June basketball(it happens), can skip football practice while healthy until August(it happens), join a football team in September(it happens), join a basketball team after Christmas(it happens) but they are made to miss two weeks of time in July because why?

For once I agree with plantman, the dead period is so the KHSAA can get time off. Not the kids. The kids who care are still working.

Kids who want to play, will be playing dead period or not. Those kids and parents care more about the sport than vacations or time off. That's ok. The reality is, parents and kids will do what they want to do regardless of whether there is a dead period or not. Go to any school in July and August, and there will be kids missing football (or whatever sport you choose) because of a family vacation. Kids miss sports time during spring and fall break too. There aren't many parents who look ahead and say "we have to take vacation during the dead period" And really I've never seen kids chances of playing diminished because they went on vacation. Getting rid of an official "dead period" gives the KHSAA one less thing they need to police.

As everyone knows, I do not have any kids yet.

...and as such, your opinions about dead period are likely skewed. High school sports are not the same as they were even 10 years ago. Families that are "dedicated" are essentially forced to schedule their vacations during dead period, or risk putting Little Johnny on the bench.

If reasonable thinking about priorities both within families and schools were aligned, the KHSAA would not have imposed a dead period, it would have worked itself out.

The dead period was put in place because priorities are and have been skewed for some time. Saying you can take vacation whenever doesn't alleviate issues with these priorities, it puts everyone in a bad situation.

Just for the record: "everyone" doesn't necessarily know you don't have kids, most just probably assume

Dead period is during peak season too.....a condo in South Carolina/Florida that is $1855.00 for the week in May is $3855.00 for the week during dead period.

Shoooooootttt.....tell coach you'll be out the first week of June.......I don't see anybody giving us any vacation kickback during dead period.

May be the case in your school(s), but not the case in several that I have been involved with. While it may not be publicized, it certainly is a factor when the depth charts are being built.

Anyone who has been on BGP actively the last 5 years knows UKMF doesn't have kids yet. That's a well known theme amongst the regulars. :lol2: :lol2:

Families are forced to have vacations? Since when. Again why the need to have vacations?
