Coaches, please, support the Dead Period and discourage player run "optionals"

Featured Replies

How many of your kids took vacation during the dead period last year ? (and by kids, I mean your biological children)

As everyone knows, I do not have any kids yet.

The AAU/traveling sports loophole allows it. If a head coach of a high school team is also a head coach of an AAU team he can have players from his high school team on his AAU team and the AAU team will practice and play in tournaments during the Dead Period.

Where is this loophole is documented? HS softball coaches who have summer travel teams are not permitted to be involved per the Dead Period guidelines. Ironically, there are several HS coaches whose daughters play on both their HS and travel teams, and still they are not permitted to be involved, but may at least sit in the stands to watch.

In 2013 Bullitt East self-reported a KHSAA violation pertaining to the Dead Period and AAU Basketball. Also, in 2012, when the Volleyball Nationals were held during the Dead Period, correspondence was submitted from KHSAA as a reminder of the guidelines for HS Coaches that are involved with Club Volleyball.

So, is this "loophole" an erroneous assumption on the part of AAU Basketball Coaches, or is there actually a written mandate from KHSAA stating such (I am sure the HS Softball Coaches would love to know the answer).

We continue to whine and complain about it being too hot for kids to be practicing in the heat of late July and August. Yet we don't let them condition during a period when the weather is just starting to get hot/humid and would make for a great transition period for them to acclimate to the hotter temps. Let's just throw them right into 100 degree temps after not doing squat for 2 weeks (some pushing for 4).

What is wrong with weights and general conditioning? I do it 4-5 times a week and I'm 40. Like someone already said, alot of these kids don't have access to weights or other equipment except at the school. Why not have a dead period from sport specific activities but allow the kids access to the weight rooms and track for conditioning under the supervision of a coach?

In my opinion the last thing we need to do is give kids a reason to sit inside for a few weeks and do nothing.

I know of kids who go on vacation during fall break in the middle of football season. Dead Period hasn't stopped them.

Fair enough. Same mindset can be used for the kids that work out during the dead period. They are going to do it regardless.

And with no dead period, why can't they still do that?

Because without the dead period they can be torn between the decision of taking little "Johnny" on vacation, letting him attend church camp, etc., or going to mandated practice knowing if he missies the coach will hold it against him and quite possibly levee some sort of punishment. Jimmy and Joey were at practice, why wasn't Johnny?

There are more than just one or two coaches out there who feel if little "Johnny" isn't practicing/working out/playing their particular sport 24/7/365, then they aren't dedicated and need to work harder. Lets not kid ourselves. I'm not saying it's the majority of coaches, but they do exist. Having the dead period takes the pressure of both parents and coaches, and how if can be viewed as anything but a good thing I don't understand.

So what you're saying is, that even without a dead period, they can still do all those things? I agree. It's about priorities. Just like everything else in life, every decision a person makes has positive and negative "consequences". If a kid wants to work out during that period, why should they not be allowed to work on their game with their coach?

That's not the case at all schools, thus the need for the dead period.

Transfer then.

I had to schedule a vacation. It starts tomorrow. The Pres/CEO of the SBGPAA (Spindoc's BGP Addiction Association) aka my wife, has imposed a 10day dead period. Otherwise I'd keep sitting here at work between wisdom teeth and root canals and continue posting on BGP. It's really exhausting and the demands are extreme. So, no texts, posts, or contact directly with any members. I think it's silly, but it's the rule. So, I'll be out at days end. Stupid rule.

AAU is a choice between the kids and their parents. If they want to do that, great. I know some kids (using basketball as an example) who would never leave the court if they didn't have to and have a basketball in their hands 24/7. AAU is a great option for them so they can stay busy playing the sport they love during the summer. Others, however, may relish the break, and/or mom and dad may want it for summer camps, summer vacations etc. and know little Johnny isn't missing required practices, conditioning, etc.

I have some parents tell me they are grateful I try to do stuff in the summer for the kids that want to. Keeps them busy, out of trouble, they would miss not being in the gym, etc. Others are in church camp, vacation, visiting grandma/grandpa out of state, etc. Those things are important, and in the realm of everything MORE important, than missing sports for 1 month.

There is nothing REQUIRED by any sport in June. In fact...there isn't anything REQUIRED by any sport all year long. Kids voluntarily choose to play a sport. Nobody makes them play but they are made to stay away for 2 weeks in July? That's stupid as hell.

See you on the 11th homey!!!! Tell the CEO that I say hello!!!!

IMO the dead period mainly benefits football players and their families. Season is around the corner. Coaches are excited and anxious. Kids/families need a chance to be together with no football for a week. Dead period accomplishes that.

Baseball/basketball players are not impacted by the dead period. No high school coach is going to "expect" a kid to not take a vacation for a week during the summer. Without the dead period, too many football coaches would expect that.

No clue but the head coach of Casey County is the head coach of Team Manimal. I guess we'll find out in the coming weeks of dead period if he coaches his Team Manimal team that has two players from his Casey County team playing on it.
