July 15, 201511 yr He didn't hire him for one player but you can bet your last dollar he made sure he was compatible with Patty. Stoops has one year to keep the momentum going with this program. I would bet that year on the QB that he's coached for a few years vs one who hangs out at EKU dorms, but that's just me. I know that you know Drew personally and I hope he grows/matures as a person. But he has a lot to prove. Stoops walked on campus firing shots at Jokers inability to coach players, saying juco's were the most fundamentally sound, well let's see how groomed Pat is. If he is groomed he could get drafted someday, I don't see the same scenario for Drew but I could be wrong. You can continue to take shots at Barker, but truth is he was simply visiting some high school buddies in Richmond and a very immature drunken idiot who was accosting a female started the entire incident. Of course, Drew gets the heat for doing nothing but being there and being the victim of cowardly assault. Trust me, Coach Stoops knows who the "knuckleheads" are and Drew is not one of them. I really hope this thread does not get derailed, but your shots needed to be addressed. Now back to football.

Ok.. Back to football, how are the special teams looking? Anyone?
July 15, 201511 yr I have no dog in the fight for either, I'm just a Cat fan. IMO Towles improved very little over the course of the season. He can hit the open receiver just fine, but he just doesn't seem to have the ability to see the pass before the receiver is open. When you get into SEC play you have to be able to see it.

July 15, 201511 yr I'm of the belief that you open up all positions to competition when you are coming off a 6 game losing streak. Iron sharpens Iron.
July 15, 201511 yr Stoops did got out and hire a better OC. I know talent was not to the likings when they arrived. But the last two years Air Raid 2.0 has been a flop. I think Dawson is a better OC and you will see a more agressive offense. I wonder why they changed to a 4-3 - They have spent first two years recruiting kids to fit a 4-3 and switch mid year. I would have to think they may be short on a few linebackers.
July 15, 201511 yr I thought he looked amazing at Florida but the whole team went into the tank a few weeks after. If Barker throws three interceptions in a game, there is no chance you would say he looked amazing.
July 15, 201511 yr Stoops commented on the QB situation today at SEC Media Days. As a few others have said Pat is in the lead but it's a narrow lead. Both will play early in the season IMO. Stoops on Kentucky QBs: Competition ongoing, Barker making strides
July 15, 201511 yr Interesting comments from CMS................I agree with you Clyde. I think CMS is very anxious to see Barker in game action and you may see both play early. If your're Barker, an opportunity like that would be a great way to prove your ability and show you are ready to lead this team. “I think they’re similar in a lot of ways, they both can run a little bit and they both have strong arms,” Stoops said. “Drew may be more accurate on intermediate throws, but Patrick is greatly improved in that area. So it’s just close. They’re more similar than they are different, so we’ll see. “Drew hasn’t played in a game environment and I think any time you play the quarterback position, I think that’s key, getting him under center in a game. I believe Drew has that something you’re looking for when you get under center and you put him in the game and the lights come on. That ability to make plays.”

If he is groomed he could get drafted someday, I don't see the same scenario for Drew but I could be wrong. Lets not forget it took Towles until his 3rd year in college football to be the starter. Yet you say he can be groomed to be a NFL player but Barker who you haven't seen play can't be groomed to play in the NFL even though he is only going into his second year of college ball. Even though Barker was the guy Stoops targeted to be his QB to get this program going the way he wants it? Stoops is going to do whats best for this program, and if that is Towles then Towles will start. If he feels like Barker is best after watching the two in practice everyday, then Barker will start. You would think that Towles who does have experience would have already ended this competition. However the fact that Towles hasn't pulled away enough to be named the starter says a lot IMO. Hopefully it doesnt mean that Towles play has slipped, but that Barker has just really stepped up his game. Which is a great thing for UK to have two QB's that they could do well with.
July 15, 201511 yr I thought he looked amazing at Florida but the whole team went into the tank a few weeks after. One of the reasons why they looked good early in the year is because Towles played well, one of the reasons why the team went into the tank shortly after that is becasue Towles play went way down and was very inconsistent and didn't show much improvement at all as the year went on. Which is why there is a competition and probably why he hasn't been named the starter because you would think someone with experience would have easily won the job. So the competition for the job must be closer than people think. I do think he will end up starting, but will be pulled quickly if he is inconsistent like last year to give Barker a shot.
