I think there are few out there that don't have mixed ethnicity somewhere in there lineage. DNA might tell us what % we are of each...but at what percent do I have to be to claim that ethnicity as my own?

In 2015 I can't imagine affirmative action being needed or even an issue anymore.

 

Everyone is protected from discrimination. Race, color, creed and nationality are all protected from discrimination. Race means white and black are protected. Not just black. At least that has always been my interpretation.

So you're saying that there's no quotas anymore where companies feel they have to hire a certain percentage of minorities? I also seem to hear a whole lot here in my area from certain unions, particularly the teachers union, that say a certain number of minorities have to be hired. There's no pressure on say, police departments to hire minorities and to make sure that more are promoted?

 

If affirmative action laws are no longer needed then lets get them off the books.

Wow! No words. If she teaches Africana Studies at E Washington U we can assume she's taken a job from an African American? What other jobs/benefits has she received that should have gone to someone they were meant for?

I agree.....she is not doing it out of disrespect....it seems to me she identifies with and wants to be black. I have met people like that. I grew up in the South part of Memphis which was/is predominantly black. I knew white kids in school that identified more with black culture than white culture...what's wrong with that. When I moved to Colorado, I used to kid a black friend who was from Colorado that I had more black history than he did.

That's a question for teachers and cops.

 

Wouldn't bother me any to get rid of it. I know TONS of college educated blacks who got their jobs based their abilities and not a skin quota. TONS. Any company in 2015 that still uses quotas is still operating under the Good Ole Boys Network. I'm not seeing that network as prevalent these days as I did in the 80s when affirmative action was more necessary.

I think that depends on what the department head deems as "best qualified". I would think it would be highly ironic that a non-African American was teaching African Studies, depending on the context of the course.
