Show me a 1B or 3B in baseball that plays 30 ft from the plate when the "situation" calls for bunt….doesn't happen. Apples and oranges when you are looking at baseball v softball and the corner injuries, if it wasn't, you would never see any college corner wearing a mask, ever….

I would think that a baseball corner moving up to 50 to 60 feet would be similar to 30 for softball. Are you saying girls just don't have the reaction time and skills to protect themselves like the guys? We went through this same type discussion a few years back when metal spikes were legalized, I still haven't seen the disasters that it was supposed to cause. I know I might be coming off as a little insensitive, but I sure would like to see our girls as a whole get a little tougher.

Not a question of athleticism. Just makes good overall safety sense.

 

It's high school sports with a solid projectile coming at your head / face, just a game today, they have the rest of their lives to make decisions about their safety.

Toughness is overrated. There is no amount of toughness that can fix taking a ball traveling at a high rate of speed, off your grill. And I'd have no issues with requiring baseball pitchers to wear some sort of protection either.

I haven't seen much of the college baseball world series, but Florida's 1st baseman wears a mask. I figure if it's good enough for any college or pro player, then it should be good enough for my daughter.

My 16 yr old son had his orbital socket completely shattered pitching last travel season. Probably one of the worst things I have witnessed. He's had one major reconstructive surgery and needs at least 1 more surgery. Thankfully, he didn't suffer a major head injury. I have heard a parent say my daughter doesn't want to wear one, but I wish the state or coach would mandate it!

The state should not have to legislate it! It should not be left up to the coach! It simply should be a decision between the parent and the child! IMO the Corners and Pitcher should wear a mask. Why not?

Do they do a lot of pull back hitting in baseball ? Usually if a baseball corner moves in,it's for an actual bunt

Well for what it's worth... 50 to 60 feet in baseball does not compare to 30 feet for fastpitch... Todd Ramey and DJ Mills hit the ball as hard as anyone I've seen. Even as a 15u players I coached third 10 feet behind the bag and still managed to take a couple shots... But I'll take my chances at 50 feet with Ramey and Mills before 30 with Graybill. And that is absolutly no disrespect to Todd or DJ Kids were beating me up as a 14u players. The velocity off the bat is similar the closer you are to the bat, the softball drops off quicker but not within 30 feet.

 

And let's see you stand at 30 feet with Graybill or Dutcher sending lasers at your head, without a mask, see just how tough you are... Sorry for the HHS references but that's who I know...

I've got a brilliant idea....of course we need an even more brilliant volunteer. The volunteer will stand 40 ft away and take a line drive to the head from a baseball and softball. Then maybe just maybe we can ask which hurts more, if they can even remember:)....and no I'm not gonna volunteer unless I can wear a mask:)

From my perspective, softball scares me a bit more than baseball. For the basic reasons ESPN points out.

Not sure if it's reality or not, but to me, it seems like the baseball path is much more predictable vs a softball.-Once it's hit that is.

Guess the larger surface area leads to a bigger aerodynamic effect from the spin.

 

I've been hit by softballs and baseballs. They both hurt! But the not-so-soft softball leaves a bigger bruise.
