TB Pitcher Alex Cobb getting hit in the head. I was at this game 10 rows behind the first base dugout and it sounded like someone dropped a watermelon from the 10th story, even more amplified in the Tropicana Dome.

 

I have had 3 very good players and athletes in the 8 years of coaching fast pitch take a softball to the face - one broke her orbital bone around the bottom of her eye socket, one girl lost a few teeth (we saved them by putting them in milk), and one girl broke her nose and had a concussion. That does not include any of the head and facial injuries that never happened that I witnessed because the girl WAS WEARING A FACEMASK.

 

All IFs should wear the facemask, there is no good reason not to...we have the technology available - use it. I've said it before - it's like a parent not vaccinating (polio, TB, etc.) their kids - why would you not protect them when the resources and technology are available?

Yet we have so many disagree and try to make it a gender issue...boggles the mind. I do believe that if you watch / participate in enough FP inside the fence, you come around to being a believer.

Again, I'm all for pitchers, 1st, & 3rd baseman wearing them.......all others optional.

Villa Madonna Junior 1st Baseman, Alexa Meier, wore a face mask at the All-Star game AND all season long. Coach Meier is a huge advocate that his infielders wear masks. His pitcher (and daughter), 8th grader Brooke Meier, also wears a chest protector.

 

Not sure if nkysoftball watched the entire Junior All-Star game, but while she did not start, A. Meier played several innings at 1st, with her mask ON!

I stand corrected!! I want to be clear, I am not against the facemasks what I am against is the requirement to wear them, especially outfielders.

So let me ask this, if there are saftey issues in which most of the girls wear protective mask and body padding (excluding the catcher obviously) is the sport unsafe to play?

No, IMO...businesses found a way to exploit parental fear and are capitalizing on it. Yes, there are risks, but since my involvement in high school & summer softball (since 2008), I have yet to see ONE injury from a batted ball hitting a girl in the field. I've seen plenty of games BTW.

I remember many years ago, when I worked in Retail for a large sporting goods chain. A child in a local baseball league died after getting hit in the chest with a hard ground ball. No pre-existing condition, just one of those one in a million situations where he got hit in wrong place at the wrong time. Almost instantly, the heart guard protectors suddenly became highly promoted, using fear.

I believe this situation also brought about the installation of AED's all over the region

I can't speak for this area, as this occurred when I lived in Southeast Pennsylvania around 1994. I can't remember whether AED's became common or not. I do know even now, that AED's aren't available at most non school related events.
