I can't speak for this area, as this occurred when I lived in Southeast Pennsylvania around 1994. I can't remember whether AED's became common or not. I do know even now, that AED's aren't available at most non school related events.

There is no certification for AED that I am aware of. Self explanatory instructions on the unit itself. There have been some demonstration overviews that were offered, but nothing mandatory that I am aware of.

I think they should all wear masks. My daughter's U12 team is about half and half this season. I would rather see them all in masks.

 

I see no shame in it although I usually get labeled as a loser when I wear one in adult softball. Sorry...not letting a 125 mph line drive hit me in the face.

Youth organizations I do not know but at the HS level, all coaches have to be CPR certified and during that CPR certification, they are showed how to use the AEDs.

I couldn't tell you. I know some trainers have them with them but the vast majority probably do not. So the answer is "I'm not sure".

I remember many years ago, when I worked in Retail for a large sporting goods chain. A child in a local baseball league died after getting hit in the chest with a hard ground ball. No pre-existing condition, just one of those one in a million situations where he got hit in wrong place at the wrong time. Almost instantly, the heart guard protectors suddenly became highly promoted, using fear.

The instance I was referring happened about 20 years ago in Southeast Pennsylavania. I vaguely do remember the instance you mention, but was not working in the sporting goods industry anymore, so I can't comment on the impact or people capitalizing on the tragedy.

They are pretty small these days. I bet most of the trainers have one with them.
