Summer College Camp Reports - Football

Featured Replies

Hearing so much about the kids camping all over the place during the week. Anyone else obligated to be at practice during the week or do we have coaches that grant exceptions to some kids....maybe you work the camp into your family schedule before or after the scheduled high school practice??? Business as usual on Shelbyville Rd and goal #1 is winning #24 . Don't miss a scheduled practice for a camp or next man up for the Rocks. I think our kids have a small window to work in a local 6pm camp during the week or save it for the weekends. Lot of nice camps during the week - just wondering about practice schedules and the possibility of missing practice to be in Nashville or Muncie...how it works for other programs?

Our workouts are in the mornings. Kids sometimes do the "mental work" at our workout and then go to a camp in the evening if it's local.

If they have a weekday camp far away, they are certainly excused from our workout.

Different ways to skin a cat. I know at T you absolutely do not miss a June workout, but they don't have formal spring practices. We do quite a bit in the spring and if a kid misses in June and it's for a CAMP where he's working on football skills, we're okay with that. Then again, the offensive system at T is pretty complex compared to what most of the rest of us do and so they require a lot more 'classroom' work to learn the system. If a kid misses a day of a classroom session, it's probably similar to missing a day of math class. We put all our 'classroom sessions' online for our kids to watch at home prior to workouts so there's a chance for a kid to do an online 'makeup' if he misses for a camp.

Our philosophy is since June is about the only time colleges will have camps and it's COLLEGE camps that really mean the most for their chances of getting offered, we allow them to miss for those.

Then you have schools like Scott County. Very successful year-in, year-out and they give their kids completely OFF in June.

Love it, Coach J.

Appreciate you sharing with the audience. Always refreshing! No doubt you can handle the camp situation a number of different ways. No wrong way or right way...love what we do in our program and appreciate what you do as well...especially for so many kids around the Commonwealth.

I know every school obviously does it differently . It depends on the Head Coach in the direction and priorities. I know many coaches who Love the program and wants to win , but loves the kids and wants to see them be successful and win as individuals in life . I think those particular coaches, are the ones that encourage the upper classman to attend camps , why hold back a kid to better himself , or even get exposure to have an education paid for !! No right or wrong answer here .. Like I said ..its a priority thing and personal preferance . I do know many that excuse it

Punish a kid because he is going to a college camp? That is the dumbest thing I ever heard.

I'd hope that a HS coach would be encouraging kids with some talent to go to camps and telling those that don't that they need to get in the weight room and the practice field and get better.

Having guys at camps and then a few moving on to play in college keeps the pipeline excited for the younger guys.

I am sure Kash Daniels coach is worried about him not being at a June workout to go to South Carolina and receive an offer. TO punish a kid for working out for a college is ridiculous. But hey to each his own.

Hopefully some of those camp kids get mad and play for a NKY team instead of the Rocks! I would love to see Foos come to SK.

Folks...poor choice of words when I said next man up. Something we regularly use around campus because we dress 100 + varsity kids. If you choose to be away from a scheduled practice at Trinity, you better believe a more than qualified player is going to get your reps. We have no shortage of scholarships or coaches visiting our campus. How many schools can say Ohio State has been to practice recently? Just want to reinforce that our coaches encourage all players to go out and make his own opportunities - at the same time, helping college coaches if they call or need more info on our players. To suggest our staff may punish a kid for missing is outrageous. How would you feel if the guy ahead of you missed a team workout - then you went out that day and had 5 "picks" in 7 on 7 from your DB spot...but didn't get any love from the staff? Just give it right back to the guy that wasn't at practice on Monday this week, missed Tuesday last week, and scheduled to miss again on Thursday next week? If you miss a practice and the guy getting your reps is more than qualified, are you not punishing the replacement if you don't give him consideration? It goes both ways.

Different strokes for different folks. Guess the big thing is having 100+ guys fighting for spots could have an impact.

And keep dreaming about Foos! Just like his Dad before him, Connor is putting in the work to have another amazing season for the ROCKS. He has nothing to worry about in regard to recruiting. UL loved him last weekend and plenty of schools will be knocking down the door very soon. It would certainly be a treat for you guys at SK to have a guy like Foos...but he has green blood running through his veins.

Foos mother is a SK grad so you never know it could happen. :D

I'm sure though at T, coaches come through there by the dozen during the spring looking for up and coming prospects etc. Smaller schools, or a big talent at smaller/county school doesn't usually get that opportunity.

Where do you come up w/ this stuff??? Truly entertaining, thx!!!!

Cole Bentley from Belfry has attended several camps including a Rivals Camp in Tennessee, the University of Tennesse, UGA, and University of Florida.

Ray Horton has attended the Nike Camp at Columbus and the Rivals Camp in Indianapolis.
