Rivals Combine Indianapolis April 12th

Featured Replies

Don't really care about anyone else's, my bottom line is wins and losses and I've seen kids that who aren't Blazers win a lot of ball games. Again, speed does kill don't get me wrong but wins can be obtained if you have a group of kids that can make football plays and aren't members of the 4.4 club, that's my only point.

I must have misunderstood the reason for this thread. It is about a combine, so i thought we were speaking of college recruiting. You are right that being good at high school football has less to do with raw speed, but being recruited by schools at a high level has everything to do with raw speed and size. A lot of kids are great high school players and don't get a sniff at scholarship football because they don't have the measurables.

IN my opinion a 40 time is a good measure for finding elite WR/RB/DB. QB needs to read defenses and deliver a pass accurately - speed is a nice to have. Lineman need a whole different set of skills. But none of that measures football IQ, instincts and toughness. That shows up on film -- the number one recruiting tool.

I think kids should to the rivals camps instead of the rivals combine where they can go one on one against kids in drills.

That there shows just how much you know. You don't just GO to a Rivals camp!

Cobb was a 2 star because he was small, not because he was slow. He ran a 10.75 100 as a junior in high school. You can be small and fast and make it. You can't be small and slow at a skill position. Lineman and Qb's those times don't matter. But if you want to be a RB, WR, C, or Safety they are huge. 1 bad time might kill you if you don't have another time, either at the camp of a college recruiting you or another laser time, that can change people's mind.

A lot of these kids did last year.

If your d1 you better be very fast as a skill player. There are a lot of fast small kids. The smaller you are the faster you need to be. A 6'4 220lb kid running a 4.7 is much more impressive than a 5'9 175lb kid doing the same thing.

Yes, you can go by invite, but i'm pretty sure you can't just register yourself for a camp. There were a couple of factors at the combine that MAY have effected times

1. The winds were up and down and all over the place.

2. Some groups did their shuttles late in the rotations, and the turf was not as stiff as when the drills began. (quite a few kids slipping).

I didn't see one college coach or scout that I would deem important there, so we took that combine as a measuring stick. Now, we know what to work on agility drill wise prior to going in front of college coaches at the one day camps. Have your best day in front of 1 of many coaches and even the 5.0 timed 40 runners can get that offer they want. You don't have to be a Rivals star rated player to get a DI scholarship.

I will say this. My son was offered by D1 schools that had never times his 40. Then agian he wasn't offered for his speed. In fact he did run for WKU with a bad knee (surgey weeks later) and they still offered a PWO spot. Came to school the day before NSD and tried to talk him into forgoing a free ride at another school.

Fastest NKY would be Cameron Barrett, Dixie

Fastest KY would be Quinton Baker or Devin Gentry

I hear the Mcgregor kid at Ryle is pretty fast, can anyone confirm that?

So with all of this talk, if we had to make a guess who would you guys say the fastest rb in NKY is??

From an RB standpoint Barrett may be one of the top guys. I'll take BubbyKys' word for it. :smug: Now if Erpenbeck from covcath plays RB this year. He will hold the crown for fastest.

Regardless of where Erpenbeck plays, running a 10.91 100M dash is flat out flying. I saw a 10.92 at the New Richmond Invitational last night from a "flyer" from CCDS...and that was a heckuva lot of fun to watch. Jake will be one of the fastest on the field wherever he plays in KY this season.

I agree with the earlier posts regarding football IQ, moves, ability to run through people, vision, etc. But one thing is abundantly clear. Each level from FBS to DivIII places a high value on speed, especially at the RB position. If you don't have that, well you better have Ron Dayne size and strength ( former Wisconsin Badger ) to have an impact and play at the FBS level from the backfield.

I'm really looking forward to hearing more about college interest with Colin England. Size and speed wise he leans more towards the big, strong, fair speed profile. If he stays healthy, I wouldn't be surprised if he runs for 1500 + yards if he gets the carries. FCS and MAC schools should come a calling and in line. And as some of you have stated in earlier threads maybe TE or ILB is a better fit if he adds more mass and stength.

I hear Purdue is big on Dillon Powell and that is fantastic. Dillon is a great kid, I'm a fan. I also know Dillon can still get a full ride and contribute earlier than his Junior year at a Div II school or FCS school. I've noticed a large migration of impatient FBS ( 2-4 * ) kids who don't want to wait to play and have trickled down to the FCS and DivII ranks where they can play sooner and occupy a position for 3-4 seasons. It is what it is and you can't fault them for doing so.

FCS worthy recruits are doing this with NAIA and Div III as well. The skyrocketing costs of a college education have changed the landscape tremendously since I was in college back in the early 90s. Costs have grown literally anywhere from 3-5 times as much in less than 15 years between private and public institutions of learning.

Rivals serves it purpose if you are a Quentin Baker quality of athlete who needs exposure. I'm more old school and see value in building rapport with "decision makers" more up close and not through middle men. Might be a better idea to id potential fits, gain consensus from objective third parties, and target particular schools camps. Face to face and handshakes still hold water especially when the end result is college coaches calling, emailing, texting your son, when they are able to do so. An OC for a successful FCS school told me last year ultimately we want kids that want to be with us. Our attracted to our culture, have goals, work ethic, and our coachable.

I'm hoping all our of NKY student-athletes stay healthy, have success, and land opportunities to play the game they love at the next level. If football can be a vehicle towards lowering the cost of a college education that is great! :thumb: Sorry for the long post...

So do you believe/trust the laser times ?

Over hand held, yes.

I don't think one element is THE TOP recruiting tool. I think that it is a pretty balanced combination of things. Kids look great on film and flop at the next level just like the genetic freaks who don't love the game enough to learn it. It is definitely a blend and guessing game that film study does play a huge part in.

I think it's a blend of film/speed/size. You could have great film but play in a football weak area. So the size/speed gives coaches another measuring stick to use. If your the strongest best tackle in the state great film but 6'0 your not playing d1 as a tackel. D1 coaches will offer the 6'5 tackle that your better than.
