Covington Holy Cross wins first state championship

 

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – With the score tied at 32 and 19.6 seconds left in the state championship game, coach Kes Murphy drew up a play to get his Covington Holy Cross girls basketball team the victory.

 

Senior Abby Hassert, who had gone scoreless in 25 minutes of playing time, wasn’t exactly the top choice to take the shot.

 

“I was none,” Hassert said of her scoring option on the play. “I knew I had to get the ball to somebody to score.”

 

But with no other options open, Hassert had to move. She got the ball near the free-throw line, faked her defender into the air, drove the right side of the lane and scored the game-winning points with 5.5 seconds left as the Indians beat Allen County-Scottsville 35-32 in the final of the Houchens Industries/KHSAA Sweet 16 in front of 5,335 fans at E.A. Diddle Arena.

Allen County-Scottsville falls 35-32 to Holy Cross in state title game

 

The dream of a state title for the Allen County-Scottsville girls' basketball team was crushed in the final seconds of a 35-32 to Covington Holy Cross in Sunday's Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls' Sweet Sixteen championship at E.A. Diddle Arena.

 

Allen County-Scottsville (30-5) was less than two minutes from the first state title in school history before Holy Cross scored the final four points - including Abby Hassart's three-point play with 5.5 seconds left - to seal the win.

 

Holy Cross (33-3) trailed 32-31 with 1:25 left, but got life when the Lady Patriots' Sarah Sutton missed the front end of a 1-and-1.

Ally Mayhaus tied the score 32-32 by splitting a pair of free throws with 1:08 left.

 

Holy Cross then got a steal near midcourt and held for the final play, with Hassart driving into the lane for a three-point play.

Covington Holy Cross wins Girls' Sweet Sixteen title

 

BOWLING GREEN — Abby Hassert picked a fine time for her only points of the game Sunday.

 

Hassert drove down the lane and put in the winning basket, plus a free throw, with 5.5 seconds left to vault Covington Holy Cross to a 35-32 victory over Allen County-Scottsville in the Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls’ Sweet Sixteen championship game.

 

“I knew I had to do something,” said Hassert, a 5-foot-10 senior. “I knew that we had to get the ball to somebody to score and I saw the lane wide open, and I knew I had to take it.”

 

An E.A. Diddle Arena crowd of 5,335 roared.

 

After multiple timeouts, Allen County-Scottsville had a last shot to tie. But Morgan Rich’s long three-point try from near her team's bench hit off the backboard and rim.

 

“We got exactly what we wanted,” Patriots Coach Brad Bonds said. “We got Morgan in the right spot for the shot. We threw it up to Savannah (Gregory), who threw it to Morgan. It was perfect. It was executed great. We got the shot we wanted.”

 

Holy Cross (33-3), out of the 9th Region, ended the season on a 22-game winning streak.

 

The Indians, with a school enrollment of 406, also won the All “A” Classic title back on Feb. 1. They are the fourth team ever to sweep the KHSAA and All “A” titles in the same season, joining Nicholas County (1993) Hazard (1997) and Lexington Christian (2007).

 

“It doesn’t matter the size. It really doesn’t matter the size,” said Deja Turner, who led Holy Cross with 13 points and five rebounds, and who was named tourney MVP. “We came in here against some big, big teams. We knocked off some very big teams, and we came through and we pulled it out twice.”

Counting all A & sweet 16, lotta hardware back to 9th region in past 15 mos.

Holy Cross took it to another level that later part of the season, that is for sure. I loved their business like, confident and methodic approach they seemed to have through the tournament. Congratulations to the players coaches, staff, school and community!!!

Dare to dream, better to plan. Kes had this team prepared, poised I think is how he described it. Nice work, kids represented their community very well on and off the court. Make history, now enjoy it for the rest of your lives.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Coach Kes Murphy coaches the first 9th Region girls basketball state champion and his older sister Donna was the first Kentucky Miss Basketball. How ironic.
