Has HC rendered the All-A meaningless?

Featured Replies

Well lets see........the year Holy Cross Boys won the All-A State they did not make it out of the District. The 3 years in a row the NCC Boys have won the All-A State they have lost in the first round of the region, lost in the semis, and lost in the first round...........does not sound like those teams are competing with the large schools at such a great level.

If you took the St. Henry, NCC, and Holy Cross out of the 9th region All-A then Newport or Lloyd or Beechwood would likely have won every Boys 9th region ALL-A in recent memory. So better take them out too. On the Girls better remove Villa too because they would have won the majority of the 9th region All-As.

And of course take away the majority of attendance. Dayton, Bellevue, Ludlow etc already play each other twice a year. Maybe there would some added excitement if it were an All-A game but it isn't going to come anywhere close to NCC vs Newport and Holy Cross vs St. Henry in semifinals.

So if you want to kill the All-A restrict it to the 75 or 50 or whatever smallest schools.

I did notice that a couple schools did not compete in the event this year like BTOWN in the boys (enrollment may have been factor idk)..

If Btown means Bardstown, you are correct. They been playing football in 2A for years and playing basketball in 1A. Pathetic I think, but finally was made to move out of 1A.

Would this argument being going on had HC not won the All A but are still in the sweet sixteen? They took care of business and the schedule put in front of them and therefore are All A State champs and start tomorrow towards a Khsaa state championship, give it a rest.

It would for me because I started my conversation about this 3 years ago. And used historical stats from back then and the last two years align almost exactly with what I was saying two years ago. I use trends before I make my arguments. So the HC result this year just helps the crusade I went on two years ago. Dallas joined the fight last year, so he's probably close to being in the same boat as me as far as if this was spawned by HC's result.

I hope you're not using the recent NCC boys teams as examples are you? Because are you saying they couldn't compete? And not making it out of district isn't an indication you can't compete. ND can compete this year and didn't make it out of districts. There have been plenty of years the Conner, Boone and Ryle were very good...maybe all in the top 5-6 and one of them didn't make it out of districts. You're stretching what we are really talking about. Getting upset or playing in a loaded district does not mean that team couldn't compete.

You say likely have won. But that 3 different teams and is way better than what we have now as far as spreading it out, right? And it would open it up more for the Ludlows and Bellevues and even Daytons on occasion on the boys side. At least they'd have a shot against those other teams mentioned, right? And may even win one from time to time. Right now, none of those teams either of us mentioned would even sniff a chance to win!

And you really think Villa would dominate on the girl's side??? There's not a chance they would have beat Newport, Ludlow, Beechwood and maybe even Bellevue this year. And Villa is private, so they would be removed with NCC anyway!

Attendance??? Are we worried about attendance or providing opportunities for those teams to experience success?? Maybe if they had a shot of doing something in the A, maybe they don't schedule each other twice a year.

Kill the all A?? It may kill it the way you like it. And all the other perennial winners from all the regions. It actually may make it better for the majority of the teams in the tournament if the perennial winners weren't in it. And yes, several of the perennial winners are private schools. The only real places that the perennial winners aren't private schools are where there aren't very many private schools and they are extremely small and we've barely heard of them.

Again, I have proposed solutions that include the private schools as well. But this is also one that could help too. I don't really care about how it's done. I'd just like to see it get back to the schools that need this tournament. Not the schools that use it as another trophy in the case. That's not being mean, that's stating that the ones that always win say how much fun and what a great tournament. Well sure it is...you them! The majority of the defenders of this tournament come from the successful schools because it's fun for your kids! I get it. But for every one of your kids, there are 5-10 other kids from those small schools that never have a chance. So is it really that great of an event holistically (when the intent is to provided opportunities) or is it just really awesome for the ones that win it all the time. I get that it is awesome for those kids that win it all the time. But I didn't think the intent was to provide opportunities for kids that already have the same opportunities as every other school in the state.

That is some strong stuff right there. I highlighted my favorite points. Nothing but crickets from the All-A defenders after that.

You would, say what you want but if you played in it you would feel the same as we do.

If you and RCC9 have the answers go see Stan sure he would listen to what had to say.

This is my point...You feel its the greatest thing on earth and that most likely comes from the success you had in it. But do you think the girls from Ludlow, Bellevue and Dayton (etc.) feel the same way about it as you or is it just another game on their schedule that they get smashed. My point again being...the perennial winners love it! I get it! But the majority are most likely not anywhere near the excitement level of a few.

It would be awesome if there was more excitement from many, rather than a few. That's my point all along. Before the ALL A region starts every year on the girls side, I can tell you who the winner was going to be. That's not fun. And it's always the same 1-2, occasionally 3 teams.

I do feel these girls feel better about their odds of winning the all A regional than they do of winning the overall region. That goal could be obtainable with a solid team and a big upset.

A) The All-A was not formed for small Public schools. One of the founders when it started in NKY was Covington Latin school. Holy Cross was also a large part as were public schools Dayton, Bellevue, Ludlow.

B) The "A" in ALL-A was designated when there were only 4 classes in football. So if you go back to 4 classes in football some of the larger schools like Holy Cross etc. would still be eligible by the "old" definition.

C) Naturally the money made by the All-A is important. Otherwise it could not exist on a statewide level. So yes trying to "shrink" the All-A would likely be suicidal. There are some regions where there are very few A teams and some regions (like the 9th) where there are many. Some regions would be left with very few teams if any downward adjustment were made.

D) If you like the Sweet 16 concept.....then you need to love the All-A because it keeps the talk of KY being the only state without classes for basketball down. A strong All-A equals a strong Sweet 16.

To respond to this, I agree (and it's factual) that the A was not originally intended for public schools only. While some schools by the old 4 class system would be eligible, some would not.

The idea that cutting the enrollment max number screwing up the regional assignments is flawed, because the A isn't affiliated with the KHSAA. The simple solution is to cap the enrollment number, look at the geography of the schools, and draw your own regional lines. It could exist on a statewide level if there were the appropriate adjustments made.

It's not all about the money ... They give out a lot of the money they bring in, in the form of scholarships. The All A has grown in that it's not just about basketball ... There are (or at least one time there were) art competitions which gave out scholarships to the winners ... I am pretty sure there are ROTC programs as well as cheerleading programs, too. It's been several years since I've been to the state All A (the last time I went it was at EKU), but they had all of those programs and awarded several students when I was there then.

All of this is fine and dandy, and I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but all of this fluff distorts what was the A's original purpose. Personally, I don't see why they couldn't designate a scholarship with a smaller amount of schools. May it be less of a scholarship? Sure. But it all counts.

Well your wrong I don't think its the greatest thing on earth but I am sure you think your right.

When football starts I think i can guess who is going to win it or at least be in the finals jsut about every year should those teams be moved up to a higher class?

Since you have the answers to fix the ALL A can you fix football to while your at, with the help of dallaslaredo.

There is nothing to answer its set the way it is, and do you really think that a community the size of a Ludlow and i am not knocking Ludlow at all would fill a gym if they were in the finals? Well Ludlow boys made it to the final a few years back although they brought more than normal their normal crowd still didn't fill it, although i agree with you on some of your thoughts i just dont think you leave other schools out. The enrollment is set and the ones who play in it fit that criteria.

1. Who cares if it fills the gym?

2. Yes I do think schools the size of Ludlow would fill the gym. I also think you could rob a bank in those towns on that night because there would be no one left. But it would be the thrill for those schools/kids.

Is football broken? Player safety drives the decision to have classes in football, and that's universal across the country.

Why are you diverting the conversation to a totally different topic?

Bottom line? Most can see the All A as currently constructed is broken.

Move the football teams up? Maybe, but that's not an invitational tournament. That's a KHSAA sanction event. Much different process.

As for the football playoffs...ask JumperDad! I have the same passion for changing that too! Trust me! Way too many teams make the playoffs...but please don't tell him I just said that! You want to see a thread go in the wrong direction...get all those goofy football guys over here. Thats all we need!

I'm against anything that hands out trophies like they are going out of style.
