Forgive me, I meant the last time this year's All A champ, HC Girls, went to state was 1976.

And what about the rest, starting a new tournament for the even smaller public schools, if it is important experience for them?

In the last 23 years, 4 small schools have accomplished a great feat, one came close and one is trying. Who's to say in the next 23 years that Dayton or Ludlow or Bellevue, with the right five or so girls, good coaching and great determination, might not join the list?

I really am pulling for Holy Cross to win it all now. How great it would be for a smaller school to have won the All A title and the KHSAA title in the same season. Wow! Would be such a great accomplishment.

And what this list shows is:

And what it also aligns with is that it a unique experience for small schools jut like for ALL schools.

 

Only 30 (10%) different schools have won a state since 1920. So the small schools are in the same boat as MANY much larger schools. I can name you probably 75-100 much larger schools that haven't sniffed anywhere near a state championship in the same amount of time and even much longer than that! It's supposed to be hard to win a state! Only 30 teams have ever won it!!! You want to talk about the limited times that a small pregam had won it...well there are just as many larger programs that have not won it either!!

Does the plot thicken? As was pointed out: the last time the All A champ went to State was 1976. Not sure that makes HC a perennial winner. I've been in that gym a few times. Not a lot of district and regional banners there either.

My real question (and tho I've tried to read all the posts, I hope this is not redundant): Why don't those who want a smaller school tournament just start their own? Call it the "All Public A." Organize all the teams state-wide, fine a venue, hire the refs. Instead of trying to hijack the tourny the Catholic schools started, why not put your time and effort and money into creating your own? I don't ask this to be argumentative, I really want to know.

 

 

The point is to not have all thes unique individual tournaments that have teams that can compete in both. So we go develop a public school small school tournament. Then there will be a public mid-range enrollment tournament. Then a large school only tournament. Before you know it, soon we'd have a Tournament only for schools that wear red uniforms, have no girls over 5'5" and you must have blonde hair!

 

Why not just go to classes for everyone if segregating one small population is such a great experience? That what any proponent of the A is saying. But that's not what we do in KY. We have one class until someone makes up a way to award another way of doing it...and then says "well make up your own tournament if you want to!" Really? We have one!...it's the state tournament that everyone plays in and what KY does.

Again, I'm fine with the concept of it were truly for schools that have no chance! Not for schools that have a chance to double dip!

So let me get this straight the schools that you think should be in the ALL A can they still compete for the regional as well?

Love that Kentucky has one overall state champ in the KHSAA tournament. Also love the All A for the smaller schools. We have the best of both worlds here in the Bluegrass. Love it!

Im biased I admit, I love the All A, in both soccer and basketball. My son cherishes his ring from soccer a couple years ago. BUT, at the end of the day, he was as sad as the rest of the team when they was beat by ST X a month later. The team goal was to go win the "big one". Basketball is the same, as at the end of the day, in order to get statewide recognition, you have to win on the big stage. No one really remembers who won the All A a month later, other than the member schools who participate.

I hear way more chatter about public/private schools than I do "All A". Every year a catholic school wins(pick a sport), all you hear is, they cheat, they play by different rules, blah blah. So if I'm a public school parent, I would spend more time regarding public/private/catholic debates than trying to keep a small school out of a tournament which was meant only for them. Look at all the winners in high school sports, catholic schools have huge success. The non co ed schools have a huge advantage to their competitors, you can not deny it

Now that Etown is out, I will root for HC the rest of the way. Nothing better than watching a small catholic school make some noise on the big stage. I guess if you ever went to a small school, you would understand how gratifying it is to win. The old adage , "It's a small school thang, you won't understand" still holds true, 9 pages and counting proves it.

Depends on which one of my solutions you choose to pick.

We would be having the discussion because I am talking about years, not one year. Was the intention of the tournament to allow small schools a chance to compete? If the answer is yes, then you answered your own question above. Remove the schools that can otherwise compete and make it what it is. I provided a suggestion before that allows the catholic schools to stay in the tournament too. I don't really care about whether a team is catholic or not. But it sure does start to take away some of the perennial winners (who in those years competed in their region) pretty quickly and is another way to start resolving the problem.

 

But you still haven't given me the what would be the major issues with only inviting the public schools. It's an invitation that goes out to the schools that can't compete right? Think of the 9th and remove NCC, HC, St Henry. Now who win the A in NKY? Would it actually be a team that didn't have any other opportunity to compete? And isn't what this tournament was intended for? I'm just saying it's not a bad idea if the intentions were to really make it about schools that don't get other opportunities to compete. Do you not like that idea? The criteria today is around enrollment...which has changed over the years. What is so outrageous about changing the criteria to public schools under a certain enrollment?

 

If anyone things it's about money, well don't you think that if those other schools had any chance in heck to win anything that their entire community wouldn't come out to support them??? You take away the catholic school attendance and it gets replaced by entire communities supporting their team. Nothing changes. They don't support it now because they have no prayer of even really winning a game at their A region because they get dominated by the others every year. If they had a chance, the support would be there.

 

Let's just give everyone a trophy and call it a day.
