The key is most or all the people complaining about the All A have never played in it. So really their opinions are moot.

Reducing enrollment qualifications isn't the answer. Wouldn't eliminate Holy Cross, NCC, Brossart, St. Henry etc..

No matter what you do or change someone will have an issue with it, you can make the changes and someone will look deep into it and find something wrong with the format, who is in it and want to change. I know it will never happen but I would like to see it go to Classes in basketball becaseu at least you will have at least an even playing field for everyone, at least for the most part.

If you want to go below NCC's enrollment (353) or Bishop Brossart's enrollment (332) since NCC has won about 90% of the 9th Region's All-As and Brossart has won about 70% of the 10 region All-As then there isn't going to be many schools left to compete. Also not going to be much revenue generated with so few games..........so the All-A would be unlikely to survive.

Holy Cross should have lost the ALL A Stae final, if it wasnt for an arrent pass they lose, not taking anything away from them at all but things fell right for them this year and my hats go off to them. Guess what i am trying to say is if Murray beats them in the ALL A are we having this discussion about them or the ALL A this much?

My opinion would be yes. It really has nothing to do with HC. I don't feel "competing" equals "winning a championship". If you can compete at the exact same level as 50% of all the teams, then you are competing. They won a region in the A. That would be something that many others would love and they would consider that alone a success...even if they lost the first game of the A state, they would still be elated and have kids that would have experienced something that they may never get to experience. It doesn't matter whether HC won the A state or not. They were clearly able to compete in the general population, so they took opportunities away from other small teams by being in the A too. And it's not just HC. They just happen to win it this year.

 

One of the major issues in my opinion with sports today is that people equate "competitive" to "winning championships". Meaning a lot of people feel that if they don't win the championship occasionally, they aren't competing or consider themselves competitive. Winning any championship should be a great accomplishment. But in today's world (just like the A), all kinds of exceptions are made up to create "championships" so our poor kids can experience success and we don't hurt their feelings because its just not fair to play against those big bullies. Well what a punch in the mouth when they get into the real world and find out "That ain't how it works!"

 

The last part is more of a rant on society and all sports, but for the most part is a big part of my argument around the A.

How many schools have less than 250 students? If you go that far down in the enrollment the ALL A would be no more and you can't be selective on teams just because they can compete with the big schools that is to much of an undertaking for someone. If you do it the way you want (picking and choosing who can compete on a given year) and a team that you think can compete with the big schools now has injuries or what have you can't compete now with the big schools, so now with all that they can only play with the smaller schools but can't now because we deemed them to good early in the season.

If Kentucky ever decided to go to classes (Heavens, I hope they never do), then breaking down the enrollment cutoffs so they are a lot smaller would make sense. But they don't have classes, so the All A Classic (not affiliated at all with the KHSAA end of season tournaments) is fine as it is. You already are limiting it to the bottom third of schools enrollment-wise pretty much, and most seem to love how it is run. You are always going to have a minority who are not happy and want to change things, no matter what topic you are discussing. It's great as it is. It's just some folks have a hard time accepting they are not in control.

I think the easiest way to do it is to have a team choose which one you play in. Either you play the A or you play in the KHSAA. You choose. Or play them near the same time.

 

Or you have a committee that "invites" the schools based on their resume. If for instance like this year the committee looks at a team like HC and says "They were very competitive last year in the general population. They have everyone coming back and adding a D1 player. They might not be a team we invite this year". Having a committee to decide would not be that difficult. You would have the majority that are no-brainers. Then you will have some (like this year's HC team) that would be no-brainers on the upper end. The only tough decisions would come with the "tweeners" from year to year. That would not be as many as you think. There is plenty information out there these days to make educated decisions on who is in and who is out.

I'm not against classes at all. If the state wants to go to classes, it's fine. I'm for playing by the same rules and not creating a "second chance" for teams that can clearly compete as well as the top 50%. If the exception was for legitimate schools that struggle, then I'm good. But not for schools that have the same odds as everyone else. How in any way does that make sense to anyone?

 

And it sounds like you like change, so why not modifications to the A then. It's changed multiple times.

 

This tournament is really for a few schools in each region to prove who is better each year. Honestly, since this is an "invitaional", why don't they just skip the regional tournament and invite the two teams that win each region every year and go have it out in Frankfort. Cause that's really all this is. Pretty much the same teams playing for the trophy every year. If you're one of those teams, you love this tournament if you're not...well then it's just another game to eventually get your brains beat in by one of the top teams in your regular region.
