This is so strange. If the worker does this, I expect him to be disciplined (suspended or fired if done repeatedly). Jail though?!?!?! Crazy.

Also interesting that his employer, Waste Management, didn't supply a lawyer for this guy when he was hauled before the outsourced court.

Is this guy a self-employed garbage man?! Where is his employer throughout this ordeal? Why aren't they the ones being punished for the actions of their employee - the guy they sent out at 5am to start garbage collection.

Insane. The fact it's even possible to be jailed for that is unbelievable.

Won't be long that the guy working midnights will be calling raising Cain that picking it up around noon is really messing with his REM as well. Probably rewarded a settlement by the same judge.

Difference there is a water main burst is unexpected while trash pickup is typically regularly scheduled.

Seems to be more common these days, but here locally Ashland has its own fleet of trucks. From what I understand they are paid better than most would think too, plus they are eligible for retirement through the city.

 

In return, they seem to provide much more reliable service than my experience with outsourced collectors. The other day with a foot of snow on the ground, I didn't put my can out to the curb, thinking they wouldnt be here. Later in the day I heard a truck out front and seen the poor guy manhandling my trash can through the snow.

 

As far as any city having such an ordinance that would put someone in jail for doing their job, I think its nuts. A fine if it happens repeatedly, maybe, but not jail time. Personally I think even a fine is ridiculous, but small towns have some weird ordinances like that. His employer should have also went to war for the guy too.

Is it common for cities to have such ordinances? I imagine most have noise ordinances, I know Ashland does. But there are exceptions such as snow removal, garbage collection, emergency repairs, etc.
