Planet Fitness drops member after gender identity complaint

Featured Replies

MIDLAND, MI -- A Midland County woman's gym membership was canceled after she refused to stop telling fellow gym members "a man" was using the woman's locker room.

Yvette Cormier said the incident occurred Saturday, Feb. 28, when she entered the women's locker room at the Planet Fitness location at 701 Joe Mann Boulevard in Midland.

"I was blocked, because a man was standing there," Cormier said. "It freaked me out because, why is a man in here?"

After taking her complaints to Planet Fitness' corporate office, Cormier said she was told that the gym was a "no judgement zone" and they would not tell the individual in question to stay out of the women's locker room. The person has not been identified.

The slogan "Judgement Free Zone" is regularly used by Planet Fitness.

A statement released by McCall Gosselin, public relations director for Planet Fitness, states that members can use the locker room corresponding with their personal gender identity.

Cormier disagrees with the policy and feels it's a safety issue.

This gender identity thing is getting out of control. I'm sorry but just because you think of yourself as a woman, if you have a certain body part, you are not a woman. Other women should not have to feel uncomfortable walking in a shower/locker room area because he/she feels like he/she is a woman. I feel bad for businesses for having to take stands on this because something that should be so simple (if you have that part you are a man) will lead to lawsuits no matter what they do. I am sure the guy in the woman's locker room would love for PF to make him leave so he could then sue PF.

Isn't this a business decision accountability issue? If enough members don't like their "judgement free zone" and quit, then the policy would likely be changed.

Why should the women have to quit to not have to have some dude in their locker room and shower? They shouldn't have to put up with that.

She doesn't have to put up with that. I bet that there are many other gyms in the area.

That's irrelevant. She should not have to put up with it ANYWHERE. So I guess you are OK with a guy saying he feels like a woman being able to shower with other women even if some (if not all) of the women are not OK with it...

And, a couple that has a legal CCDW can't adopt a child. Yea, this all makes sense.

I likely wouldn't feel comfortable with it and I would change gyms.

I've decided I have a "Financial Identity" of 1 million dollars a year, because I like nice stuff. Therefor, everyone should give me what ever I want up to a million dollars worth of merchandise per year.

she doesn't have to put up with it. Shes free to not be a member.

She doesn't have to put up with it if she doesn't want to, she and others can change gyms. It's that simple!

Plus, changing to a REAL gym they would be better off. They still serve pizza a few times a month on Friday? brilliant business plan actually, fatten up your members so they don't lose too much weigh and not get into shape so they still have to be a member.

I feel like the business has a right to do this. I think it's a dumb business decision. The customer can just switch gyms. I also think if she was exposed to his male body part a lawsuit or charges could be brought.

A business decision.

A baker don't want to bake cakes for a gay wedding and is forced to under law.

A woman doesn't want a man taking a shower with her and the business drops her.

Something isn't right.

We cant fly the American flag

Can't pray in public anymore

Have to let guys shower with women

Preachers are almost forced to hand over sermons

Parents killing their 3yr old

Can't say Muslim Extremist

Everything is about race

Have to be politically correct over everything

We condone liars/thieves to be politicians

The POTUS has a preacher who GD's America

Who says this isn't the end times a comin

Sounds like gymtimidation!
