Traditional schools use an old school approach. It is a public school that you apply for and must accept their rules such as facial hair, hair styles & length, uniforms, several hours of daily homework, belts, and no tolerance for bad grades or behavior. If you fail to live up to their standard or code of conduct you are put out and must go to your school that is based on your address.

I guess you could call the traditional schools in Jefferson County (Butler & Male) as close to a private or parochial school as you can get in the public school system. There are three middle schools that also have this "traditional" school approach. They are Johnson Middle which feeds Butler, and Jefferson County Traditional Middle School & Barrett Traditional. If you go to those middle schools you are almost a lock to get in to either Butler or Male. Male is always full of freshmen applicants and they take the kids who apply from the traditional middle schools first. As someone pointed out, Butler tends to not have as many applicants so they have room for more non-traditional middle school kids. It has changed, but I think the BB Coach and FB Coach at Male have had so many spots to basically grab non-traditional kids but it is limited.

 

Also someone pointed out that Male has suffered in recent years because the best kids from JCTMS and Barrett did not go to Male. Unless that changes with the new coach, Male will not be able to field as talented a team as they need to in order to compete for the 7th region title.

Terms?? What kind of terms are there for high school coaches? Isn't it either take it or leave it? Male seems to be making this a total trainwreck of a process. Seems to be the norm for JCPS anymore though.

Just not the same Male anymore, they think so and that is part of the problem. Expectations are really high, region is tough, you're not getting all your kids and nothing you can do about it, all make it less desirable that most people think. GoHITP hit the nail on the head in previous thread. Lost best 3-4 kids last year and losing them agian this year so that makes your freshmen and sophomore classes down compared to others. You are in a great district that is one of positives I think. Great alumin another bonus.

I am pretty sure that Jefferson County has a coaching pay scale that keeps it the same for each coach per sport within the county. I would have to guess that "terms" have to deal with the teaching load that they were willing to take on, or lack of willing to take on as the deal breaker. Like I said in an earlier post about coaches & teaching positions, I tried to always get my major athletic teams, the ones that were the money makers for the school & team & who put the most time into those programs, jobs within the building that were less academically stressful, but still received full teacher salary (SAFE Room, EBCD, CO-Op, Credit Recovery, PLATO - classes that didn't require lesson plan prep, minimal grade entry, etc....) If my administration team wasn't willing to move a teacher out of one of these positions for a coach, more times than not I lost that hire due to them wanting an easier job during the day since they were the ones that were closing this place down 2/3/4 nights a week after everyone else had gone home essentially.

 

There is a big difference in time consumption when we are talking about teacher only, teacher & coach, & teacher of one of the programs I mentioned above & coach.

That is very true. I had the same issue when it came to hiring coaches early in my career. I really don't blame them a lot when it comes to having the "easier job" in a lot of cases because of them being at school for longer amounts of time than another teacher. However, my priority was getting a good teacher as well as a good coach and in a lot of cases we didn't have money to create another position or have someone who could be moved.

Which, as I'm sure you can attest to is usually the case. Most good coaches are the same in the classroom and then some. Problem is, burnout happens quick with most who are expected to have the best classroom as well as trying to have the best product on the court and field.
