February 15, 201511 yr So when was the last significant snowfall we have had when temps were that low? It depends on a few things, most times we just don't have the moisture when it's very cold, or lift, this time we do. But heavy snow happens somewhere in the range of I think 10 degrees and higher, but it can snow with temps lower than 10 degrees, it's just harder and usually won't get too much.

Im probably wrong, but I thought higher temps produced larger flakes, making it a heavy wet snow. Colder temps produce smaller, lighter flakes, but more of them. I could be wrong, science was never my best subject.

The kicker is you'll be dealing with this for a lot more than a day lol. Bitter cold is going to set in after the system passes, then another system will be here next weekend. Some forecasts are showing lows in the -10 to -15 range by the end of the week.

Less moisture means smaller, dry flakes. More moisture means wet flakes, causing them to stick to one another, and producing bigger flakes.

When the temperature throughout the troposphere is well below freezing the snow is term a "dry snow". A dry snow has little to no liquid within the snowflakes. During a dry snow, snowflakes tend to be smaller. Also, when trying to make a snowball, it falls apart for the most part. In a situation in which part of the troposphere is very near or just above freezing, the snowflake will partially melt. This produces a liquid film on the snowflake. This makes it much easier for snowflakes to stick together. Thus, it is liquid water that is the "glue" to producing large snowflakes and snow that is easy to make snowballs with. While a dry heavy snow tends to have a huge amount of small snowflakes, a heavy wet snow tends to have a smaller number of snowflakes but the individual snowflakes are large." Well I wasn't completely wrong lol. I can vouch for snow at 40 degrees too. It was snowing here in Ashland yesterday at 39 degrees.
