Being a KY transplant...what is the significance of the SK 80-81 team?

1st 9th region team to ever win the championship. At the time the championship game attendance for SK and Mason County was a national record.

School had an explosion in October of 1980, killing 1 student. SK was forced to have school at night at Dixie HS while the school was repaired. Overcame odds to win the State Championship.

There's a book about it too..."Pioneer Spirit". Great read!

Thanks for the heads up, will have to DVR it.

As Clyde mentioned, it was the first team from the 9th region to win it all. There had been a couple heart stopping losses in the finals before then so the 9th was anxiously waiting for someone to come along and win. The obstacles and distractions that team had to deal with made it all the more special, at least to those in NKY.

First time 9th region to win it and the boiler room blew up during school. I was in the first grade. I went to Kenton Elementary right next to SK when the school blew up it was a crazy scary situation back then.

Add a miracle win in the first round of districts as well.

Thanks guys. I will have to check this out, sounds interesting.

As an 81 HHS grad, I remember that team very well. They beat the you know what out of us during the season...so tall and long with Dixon, Meier and McKinley as the front court. I always thought their guards were under-rated as well (Ponsler and Daugherty). We almost upset CCH in the regional semis (lost in OT to the Don Turney led Colonels). If we would have upset CCH and played SK in the 9th region finals, it may have been one of the most lop sided ever:)

McKinley had one of the greatest state tournaments ever...averaged high 30's or maybe even 40 over the four games. He could really shoot it and basically earned a scholarship to UK because of that tournament if I recall correctly. The funny thing is that of all the games SK won in the state tournament that year, the finals was the easiest win...the first three were thrillers.

Clyde is right about SK almost losing in the districts. That district was LOADED that year. Walton Verona was on the line for the front of the bonus up two with about 7 seconds left. They make it, game over (no 3 point shot then). One of WV's better players misses and SK makes a shot at the buzzer to tie, then wins in OT. I hope I have that story right - I think those are the details.

I wish we still had the same uniforms sans belts.
