No, I was just thinking of a reason or benefit to pushing it back. Not saying that is why at all. It would be the same benefit for the entire state not just one region.

February 9, 201511 yr Said year round schedules would not be impacted. Thanks. FWIW, even when I was in school, I thought the three week breaks were too long... I would have much rather had two week breaks and gotten out three weeks earlier at the end of the year.
February 9, 201511 yr District's school boards can require their students to go as many days as they want. The minimum is 175. The local district would also have to pay teachers and staff the extra days, also. This would come from local funds, not state. The state only funds per pupil attendance for 175 days. There have been years the legislature has funded 177, but it almost always has been 175 they will fund. Actually State Law only requires 170 instructional days and 1062 instructional hours. Teachers are required to work 185 days by contract. Most districts have 175 days of instruction, 4 holidays, 4 Professional Development Days, and opening and closing day for teachers. If you only go 170 days then teachers have teacher work days to make up the difference, but all contracts should be 185.

February 9, 201511 yr School should start the Monday before Labor Day, end the Friday before Memorial Day. Sports should have no bearing on when school starts.

School practice school practice...kids stay up and out late. Sure the schedule is the same but it's a disadvantage. Lots of breaks in the fall: thanksgiving, Election Day, Labor Day etc

Its also a great time for kids to get some rest and get healed up, since they are out of school.
February 9, 201511 yr In all districts there is a Calendar Committee which the teachers vote. Usually there are 2-4 calendars considered and voted on. They have different start dates and all kinds of different requests come to the committee. Here are some I have seen first hand: Take the Thursday/Friday of the Mens NCAA Basketball tourney off. St Patrick's Day All week of Thanksgiving plus the Monday following. Start the day after Labor Day and get out on May 15(try this one to get 170 days in) Monday following the Super Bowl. Valentine's Day You get the gist. There would be as many calendar suggestions as their are people to vote on them. The committee consists of a parent or two, teachers, classified staff and usually the DPP (central office person responsible for school attendance primarily). Who is missing here? the students. The one's impacted the most by a calendar. Believe me you get seniors on the committee and they want to get out as early as possible to graduate. One of the key considerations also is the teacher's further education which they must have to remain certified. If the calendar goes into the second week of June, many state colleges and universities start summer school for graduate classes. ..and the last bastion of change and doing things different is the post secondary community. It sounds so easy to have a calendar, but it is a thankless process. been there many times. Not fun.
