Teams That Have Soccer But Not Football

Featured Replies

I know their's a lot of teams that have soccer (either boys or girls or both...some have girls, some have boys, most have both) but don't have a football team and their's a lot of schools that have a football team but not soccer teams. Why? Can they not afford it?

I was thinking today about teams that have soccer but not football and wondering why? St. Henry. I have heard a lot of rumors why they do not have football....not sure which one to believe.

Based on this year's soccer alignment, this is what I've come up with. Almost all are private schools.

REGION

1 - Community Christian, St. Mary

2 - Dawson Springs, Lyon County, University Heights

6 - Evangel Christian, Whitefield Academy

7 - Brown, Louisville Collegiate, St. Francis, Walden

9 - Covington Latin, St. Henry, Villa Madonna

10 - Calvary Christian, St. Patrick

11 - Model, Sayre

12 - Kentucky School f/t Deaf

13 - Oneida Baptist Institute

14 - Buckhorn, Jackson City, Wolfe County

16 - Elliott County, Menifee County, Rose Hill Christian

Out of that list, the most glaring point is the amount of private schools/religious schools. I'm not sure of the enrollment of any of these schools, but I know of private schools elsewhere who don't have football, and it ultimately because a safety issue with their lack of numbers. Yeah, you technically only need 11 kids to play, but if your starting o-line is roughly the same weight as your skill positions, it can physically get a bit dicey.

Although I can understand why someone wouldn't have football because of numbers, I really don't get the cost issue for anyone. I mean, I know it's pretty expensive to start a program from scratch, but there wouldn't be enough local and semi-local businesses to help fund it? It doesn't have to be done all in one year, and you don't even have to play a varsity schedule. Heck, play 7-on-7 and JV for a year or two, buy 25 sets of gear and get some goal posts and bleachers. I've seen some really bad facilities, I know it couldn't possibly cost that much for a field and everything that goes with it.

But, I guess every district has their reasons, good or bad.

Many of these schools are so small that football is very problematic from a numbers standpoint.

Total boys per the 2013-14 audited school year report:

1 - Community Christian 17, St. Mary 80

2 - Dawson Springs 75, Lyon County 138, University Heights 75

6 - Evangel Christian 38, Whitefield Academy 96

7 - Brown 116, Louisville Collegiate 105, St. Francis 68, Walden 25

9 - Covington Latin 108, St. Henry 282, Villa Madonna 59

10 - Calvary Christian 46, St. Patrick 33

11 - Model 124, Sayre 105

12 - Kentucky School f/t Deaf 25

13 - Oneida Baptist Institute 105

14 - Buckhorn 103, Jackson City 41, Wolfe County 169

16 - Elliott County 165, Menifee County 149, Rose Hill Christian 17

How many of those schools had football at one time and have since dropped it?

Can a football facility with bleachers, press room, locker rooms, equipment room, lights, etc. etc. etc. be built for, say, half a million dollars?

St. Henry will not have football while Mr. Otte is at the helm.

It's a head scratcher for sure.

I know that as recently as 6-7 years ago the football option was pretty much served up on a silver platter - ie: all start up costs incl equipment, uniforms etc- and Otte still passed.

Very frustrating to me as I firmly believe the sport would attract more numbers to the school and in a short period of time could well be a 1A power. There's enough kids in Boone County alone that head to Cov Cath to play football which instead could make an impact at St Henry.

It's like Otte is perfectly content with the status quo- so long as they are winning Cross Country and Track awards and periodically fielding competitive teams in soccer, basketball, volleyball and baseball, he's OK.

I remember Evangel Christian and Kentucky School f/t Deaf having teams. KSD dropped in 2001 and Evangel dropped about 7-8 years ago.

Sayre had a team in the 1960s and 1970s but haven't played in a long time. I think Buckhorn might have had teams in the 1950s and 1960s but I'd have to look it up to be sure.

There was talk of Rose Hill fielding a team several years ago. In fact they were included in a draft alignment but they never played a game. That all happened roughly the same time the KHSAA came down on them for illegal recruiting practices.

Of that list, the only schools that would seem even reasonable to have football are St. Henry, Lyon County, Elliott County, Wolfe County, and Menifee County. Elliott, Wolfe, and Menifee are all very rural with no history of the sport. I'd be shocked if they ever added. Scribe can probably give some better idea of whether football would ever be feasible at Lyon County.

I thought Menifee had a team? Maybe it was JV only? Pretty sure they have a Middle School team.

Definitely don't have football at the high school. No mention of middle school football on their website. Might you be thinking of their neighbor Morgan County?

Funny timing on this one.....I was just having a conversation with a cousin in law yesterday while seeing his new born son........

They live in Petersburg......Daughter goes to St Henry, but he mentioned that the new son will go to CCH because of Football availability.....

Wonder if those schools realize how many kids they are missing out on.......
