It's not picking and choosing, it's about using the information you have. Just because you don't have a gauge for how good every out of state team is, doesn't mean you shouldn't use the information you know about some of them.

 

It doesn't mean that you weight those games as more than in-state ones, or even weight them equally. But, if you know something yet choose to ignore it, that seems like a foolish decision to me.

 

So then the focus needs to shift to all games played against out-of-state teams and not just the ones that fit agendas. Research needs to be done on every single game and factored in appropriately. I don't think that is possible.

What if you have seen the out of state team? What if you watched the game between the team in question and the out of state team? Would you still ignore that game?

 

Yes. I personally watched Boyle County dismantle a team from South Carolina that people said was a top 5 team in South Carolina. The same weekend Boyle County lost to Whitley County and dropped in the rankings.

Due to my constraint I am unable to gather as much information as you are suggesting. However, just because I don't have comprehensive information doesn't mean I'm going to refuse to use some portion of the information I do have.

Based on what you saw, was the win over the South Carolina team a good win? What could you discern about that team? Did they feature a couple of guys capable of playing at UK? Did they have 8 guys who could all start at Lexington Catholic? Were they just not very good?

Do you think they would/could beat Lincoln Co? Southwestern? Pulaski Co?

Not you personally. I was speaking in general. In some situations when people nitpick at rankings it's usually because their team isn't where they think their team should be.

It was a great win. One of the better games Boyle has played all season. That team was athletic and presented a different kind of challenge that Boyle normally faces as Boyle won't see athletes like that at every position. They didn't have anyone that was of UK caliber but they had a lefty on the team who was decent and reminded some of the UK fans that were there of James Young though he was nowhere near as good. They had one guy who would start at Lexington Catholic but overall they just weren't that good of a team. I'd say the top 30-40 teams in the state would defeat this team.

 

I left thinking that if that team is a top 5 team in South Carolina then basketball in South Carolina sucks or someone gave me some bad information. MaxPreps.....

With the same time constraints while using every opportunity available to see as many teams as possible, research as much as possible and then discuss as much as possible in an effort to put out the most accurate rankings that can be put out. I actually think this weeks rankings are very solid.

Just stating that I think it prudent to use as much information as you can.

It's easier than it may seem. Is it foolproof? Maybe not. No one is person and no ranking system is perfect. Can anyone doing rankings out claim to nail each team's ranking? I don't think so. I do think that when doing rankings a system can be developed that aims for consistency and accuracy. Speaking for myself and only myself I can't put a lot of stock into out-of-state results knowing that I can't get an accurate gauge of just how good a team from out of state is on that particular night. It's hard enough following all of the teams in KY let alone trying to find out quality information about a team from out of state.

 

I don't understand why they can't see what you are saying,,out of state games do not have any bearing on the state ranking,,I totally agree with your thoughts..
