I think in SOME instances it could be used...the Wilmington team is an example because they have a record against multiple in state teams and beat two very good teams in LexCath and Taylor County. I think it's safe to say they are a good team and the CCH win over them is a quality win. Where it gets sticky for sure is when someone plays some random team from FL who is supposedly a top 4 team in Class 4 or whatever. No real point of reference in a lot of those matchups.

What about all the Illinois teams that the WKY teams play? How good are they? What about the teams from Indiana that KY teams play? How good are they? Some KY teams play teams from Tennessee. How good are they?

 

Trinity beat the #4 team in the nation according to MaxPreps and that is Sierra Canyon's only loss of the season. Should Trinity still be the #1 team in the state based off of that one win which is arguably the most impressive win by any team in this state so far?

 

Knott County Central defeated the #1 team in Arkansas. How does that factor in?

 

Boyle County defeated a top 5 team out of South Carolina. How does that factor in?

 

It's too hard and without a true point of reference it's better to not count any of them than to try to pick and choose which out-of-state teams count and which ones don't.

 

Seeing that Wilmington has defeated Lexington Catholic and Taylor County helps out the scope some but I still don't feel like out-of-state competition should be a factor when compiling rankings.

If the only discussion/debate is over who the #20 team is I'd say the rankings are pretty dang accurate.

Assuming these rankings were done before last nights games, they are very good. I think there are at least 5 more teams that could have been considered for the last spot.

 

Off the top of my head without doing research these are all teams worthy of the #20 spot IMO:

 

Wayne County

Boyle County

Dunbar

Lafayette

Perry County Central

Clay County

Warren Central

Monroe County

Holmes

Owen County

Oldham County

Bullitt East

Oh I have no problem with not using them. I was just pointing out someone could argue in SOME instances there is enough info there to justify using an out of state win or loss as a factor in ranking. I understand the logic that it's just better not to use any out of state games as a factor, cleans up the process and makes it consistent.

My point is that despite everything you say about out-of-state games your brain STILL knows Trinity beat a really good team. Are they #4 or #40? Doesn't matter. They're obviously legit and would rank very high in KY. So you may SAY they don't matter but in some cases your brain is factoring it in.

My brain is processing who they lost to and how they lost to them as well as factoring in the four times I watched them play this season. My brain is then wondering how crappy national rankings are if Trinity handily defeated "the #4 team in the nation".
