You are correct. I believe that will eventually happen with the bigger schools such as CovCath, NewCath, Holmes, Dixie. Ideally, SMG would LOVE to have those four play Elder, St. Xavier, LaSalle and Moeller in a tournament, but getting all to agree is another story. Also is the complaints from smaller 9th region schools the big 4 get a advantage playing games in the BOKC. The crowds would be great. You are also correct about the NKU crowds this year, absolutely bad. They even mishandled he West Va. game and played it on a Sunday when the Bengals were playing at home against the Steelers. The SMG people will tell you that NKU is not being run effectively when it comes to scheduling. Not sure who is at fault, coaches of administrators, but it sounds as if there is a lot of disconnect with NKU and SMG right now. Obviously, by the bad crowds, the community isn't turned on by NKU basketball even though it is Division I. AS a result SMG would love to have more high school events that bring in crowds and money, something NKU basketball has failed to do.

Been to both men's and women's NKU games......attendance is down right pitiful. :facepalm: And if I'm correct, the students get free tickets....plus a chance to win (I think) $1500 each game for making a foul shot, 3 pointer, and half court shot.

I have worked part time for SMG (the company that runs the BOKC) and there is no truth to this thread about the 9th region NOT being at the BOKC. To be honest, the people who run SMG's operation here enjoy the big crowds the high schools bring and prefer them to the small gatherings that NKU gives us at the BOKC. Yes, the kids get a little rowdy at the high school games, but SMG/BOKC is here to make money and covcath, newcath and the rest bring a lot of people for tickets, parking, concessions. Contrast that to the NKU games (women particularly!) where we are lucky to have 1,000 people show up. SMG would like to move all NKU women games to Regents Hall (one of the games has been moved to Regents Hall next month, I think against Kennesaw State) and that has caused a stir with several of the women's fans, but facts are they had a home game two weeks ago with less than 200 in the stands. The high school games always have 2,000 or more for the big games and a few rowdy students are welcome.

I always enjoyed the all day Saturday events at the Cintas Center, from about 10:00am to 11:00PM, H.S. basketball all day long.

One other problem for the BOKC with boys high school games is the girls coaches at two schools (guess which?) are moaning about the boys getting regular season showcase games at the BOKC and the girls don't. I admit very little knowledge about Title 9, but can't they use their eyes and see the crowds at tournament time?

You are correct. There was NEVER any talk about canceling the 9th Region tournament by the BOKC. Never.

I am glad the subject of the NKU teams and them not being able to put butts in the seats at that arena was brought up. This is a total marketing fail on the part of NKU administrators. Why they thought they could just move to D-I and build a nice arena and people would show up to watch the teams they can get to come play here is beyond me. And charging club fees just to have a right to have season tickets, etc. They need to revisit and find their own niche. High schools rule in N. Ky. This is not UK (or even UC which can't even fill its own arena in the crappy league they are in). Move the women to Regents and only have the men play half of their home games at BOKC. Then fill it up with high school dates (boy/girl double- and quadruple-headers) to fill sell more tickets and also give both the boys and girls teams experience on the floor for the region tournament.

What? I mentioned that the girls coaches who are complaining put up money to cover the cost to have a game(s) at the BOK, if they get a big gate like the boys, they get money back, maybe even a profit. But sadly, those costs will never be covered, and the BOK and NKU isn't going to hold an event that they will lose money on, if it was just a few $100, I could see it, but not thousands of dollars.

The athletic director they brought in after that is apparently just a Yes Man to the school's President, according to people in the BOKC. One of the SMG people said he was the athletic director somewhere in Wisconsin before NKU hired him, but he has brought nothing idea-wise to help attendance. He also caters to the women's head coach and they allow her to set up extra baskets for practice event though it costs a lot of money to take them down and put them up after games or events. She was an assistant coach at the same Wisconsin school the athletic director was at several years ago. I have also noticed the NKU President shows up and sits in the front row for women's games, but he rarely appears for the men's games. Not sure how to read into that!

NKU had great interest in their job when Votruba hired Scott after Jane's retirement. He made the mistake of hiring Scott, not for what transpired, but because he took the easy route to hire the guy already in the fold. Now, after the debacle with Scott, they have hired a short-term fix at AD to bridge the waters until everything settles down and they can find a more permanent solution. They are going to find when they open up the search that they won't have the interest in that AD job that they would like to have, for a myriad of reasons. They don't want to pay like a D1 school, and really, aren't in a position to at this point. They also have an uphill climb ahead of them in the D1 Men's Basketball world from a revenue standpoint, for a bunch of reasons we've debated on this site numerous times. Jane had it right that they never should have left D2, and I truly believe when the dust settles they end up back there. You see more and more schools going backwards all of the time because their eyes were bigger than their stomachs.

 

BOKC, is Molly Pascucci still the GM at BOK / SMG? She is really bright and tough as nails, if she is still there, they are in good hands on the SMG side. Before her they ran through a bunch of folks, and that only made their launch years ago all the more clunky.

As was I, I see no problem with it......in fact I love it. Hell, I'm waiting for the day when one of those kids inbounding the ball turn around and scream back at them. :lol2:

 

Unfortunately that would earn the kid on the floor a T. I tend to agree with the person who said they were a sprotsmanship purist. I absolutely loathe how low brow some cheering sections have become.
